Debut album from the Bristol born Caroline Martin. After releasing her first ep - 'Young tender rabbit meat' (John Peel played all 5 tracks from it and included it in his top 10 ep's of the month) back in 1999 she has since recorded 4 John Peel sessions, played Glastonbury, supported her idol and major influence Nina Nastasia twice, completed a UK tour, released a second ep - monn and painstakingly put together this stunning 16 track album. aside from the 7 peel session tracks, licensed from the bbc, the album consists of mostly home, self recorded, solo tracks deliberately recorded with minimal equipment and in complete solitude. with her trade mark eerie story telling, Caroline creates intimate and uneasy listening which, at times, is so menacing and fragile that you almost feel as though you're listening to something you shouldn't !
"This is excellent stuff.... another first class session from Caroline"JOHN PEEL, RADIO ONE.
"Bristolian anti-folk singer's chilling debut. Caroline Martin sounds as if PJ Harvey has inhabited the body of Gilian Welch. She sings with alarming plausibility.... It's a dark world, but with Martin as your guide, a cathartic one."
Q MAGAZINE.
"...simmeringly sexy, dark and terribly cool.... a seriously talented singer."
VENUE MAGAZINE.
"From the very first notes played to the last words sung, Caroline will have captivated you - put a spell on you - I mean it! She writes the kind of songs you don't listen to, you sink into. Easy reference points would be Cat Power or Polly Jean Harvey, but Caroline's own dark melodies and stark lyrics will make you forget anyone (or anything) else even exsists."
LADYFEST BRISTOL.
"A gutsy and assured performer, her expressive and passionate delivery has seen her become a John Peel favourite and respected artist of the singer-songwriter fraternaty. Caroline Martin's songs are dark insular, crisp and inspiring, as if she were a lost love child of Leonard Cohen. Or maybe she's that girl from the valley that Bonnie Prince Billy is always out on his horse searching for but never finds. Caroline Martin's pedigree is in no doubt."
LLAMA FESTVAL.
Solo artist, originally from Bristol now living in Somerset. Started recording in 1996. Released a 5 track EP in 1998 which was picked up by John Peel who placed it in his top ten EP's of the month. John then invited me to do a Peel session in 1999 and I went on to do 3 more for his show, the last one going out just a month before his untimely departure from this life. I have since done 2 more sessions for Radio One - one in 2005 and one in January of this year.
I released my debut album late 2004 which was descibe in Q magazine as a chilling debut - "Caroline Martin sounds as if PJ Harvey has inhabited the body of Gilian Welch. She sings with alarming plausibility."
The opening track of my album reached no. 3 in Peels final festive fifty. The album is distributed by Cargo and can be bought or ordered in all major record shops in the uk and France! As well as amazon.co.uk
My second album is in the making and I hope to get it released this year.
The Broken EP - this is the release I've always wanted to make. It's a collection of home recorded demos. There is no production - they are what they are.
I'll be having a launch party in Bristol soon after Christmas but until then it'll be available at my gigs.
Hola guapa! how´s it going!! hey, i heard you´ve been supporting the National, i loved their music and they are awesome live! good on you lady!! keep on rockin!! besitos
great with the National last night and what an encore of 'Without Permission'. If the Matt from the National rates your tune as 'the best love song in the last 6 years' you gotta have talent as he is the best songwriter around today in my opinion :-)
Aww, you didn't have to put me up there with all those amazing folks. You are too kind. Not sure who gert lush is, but I'm glad I sound like him!! Enjoyed our talk yesterday, I will be in touch soon!! : ) x p
