Whether it’s a concert hall or nightclub, Carol McCartney’s impassioned and impeccable vocal style has made her a favorite among audiences and players alike. She has performed extensively all across the U.S. and Canada, and in many other parts of the world including Europe and Asia.
Carol just recorded a cool new cd called A Night In Tunisia. Arranged by John Sherwood, it includes some of Canada's jazz greats sitting in with Carol on some wonderful standards. Some of the tunes are well known, others soon-to-be. The players included Peter Appleyard, Dave Young, Guido Basso, John MacLeod, Chase Sanborn - to name a few.
Carol was featured with Canadian jazz master Bob Brough’s quartet on last year's critically acclaimed Like a Spring Day. Jazz enthusiasts have been following Carol and this exceptional quartet at regular sessions around town.
Carol is often the featured vocalist for one of Canada’s premiere big bands, the Rex Hotel Orchestra, led by trumpeter/arranger John MacLeod. Appearing frequently with this 20-piece jazz orchestra, she performs with them to standing room only audiences, and in 2006 at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival.
Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre was fortunate to debut a new symphony show based on the music of Benny Goodman and the swing era. John MacLeod wrote a show of beautiful arrangements for the Mississauga Philharmonic (under the direction of maestro John Barnum) that highlighted JUNO award winning clarinetist Bob DeAngelis’ and Carol’s musical talents. There was an extensive Canadian tour of the show in early 2005.
Carol’s recordings include featured vocals on trumpeter Chase Sanborn’s critically-acclaimed cd’s Sweet and Low and Cut To the Chase; and on the JUNO-nominated recording (Canada’s Grammys) Taking Flight with big band Freeflight. National radio appearances include Ross Porter’s After Hours and broadcasts from the Glenn Gould Studio alongside jazz great Phil Nimmonds.
Carol continues to work with jazz legend Peter Appleyard on club and concert dates across the country with both his big band and quintet. Appleyard, an original member of the Benny Goodman Sextet, played a large role in Carol beginning her career many years ago, asking her to perform alongside countless jazz legends, including Mel Lewis, Major Holly, Bucky Pizzarelli and the late Slam Stewart.
For all of her headliner success, her favorite gig remains as an opening act: world-famous comedian Bob Newhart has invited Carol to open his shows on numerous occasions – in fact, she opened for him at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, Canada just last year.
Quick thanks to Mike Davidson for showing us all the way on how to whip MySpace into submission. Out of the box, this place can pe pretty ug-ly. Thanks, Mike.
For a refreshing change, I'm also keeping a Virb site. It's so much cooler over there :)
