“The best place to bleed is onto canvas.” Caron Bernstein
Caron Bernstein was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She
majored in painting while studying at the School of the Arts in Johannesburg. As
a young girl, music and painting were her greatest passions, but at 14 years of
age, Caron’s creative aspirations were sidetracked when she was awarded a
modeling contract with Ford Models. For the next decade, Caron’s modeling
contracts allowed her to move in the high-profile worlds of fashion, film, and
music - reigniting her musical passions.
At 23, Caron dropped modeling and focused exclusively on
music, signing three record deals with major labels by the time she was 26. The
characters she met in the punk-rock/pop-culture landscape she inhabited would
eventually serve as a backdrop for many of her paintings. But it was the next
three years that would come to shape Caron’s humorously sardonic take on life
and the subjects of her paintings for they were to hold the great tragedies of
her life. She was raped at 27. At 28 her younger brother committed suicide. And
at 29 Caron married German rock star Richard Kruspe of Rammstein.
To cope with these tragedies Caron began to express herself
through her painting, focusing on portraits that attempt to capture the darker
aspects of the subject’s character, while putting on display her own sense of
the comical nature of tragedy. It is a style she has described as ‘surrealism
combined with anime’. It is this sense of the comical in the heart of tragedy
that allowed Caron to survive these dark times, and it is this same sensibility
that continues to drive her to seek out and distill through painting her unique
form of expression. Caron continues to live and paint in New York City, her
great love, second only to the love of her dog, Siouxsie.
