"I may be an old British punk, but at the same time I guess I am still a young Ukrainian", Yuri Baliuk, the leader of the band CARPATHIANA once dreamt in his own borsch-time.
The debut of CARPATHIANA on the English stage was in 1996 together with the band "The Ukrainians". Later on the band & DJ Baluk have taken part in numerous festivals and solo performances in Britain, Spain, Poland and Ukraine (Lviv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Crimea, Kyiv). The previous albums of the band – "CARPATHIANA" (1996) and "LOVE" (1998) - were distributed in Ukraine, Poland & the U.K. Many live performances at festivals, clubs and on tv add to the overall relatively unique influence of CARPATHIANA'S music, often being completely at odds with the churn of the transparently soul-less mainstream. An extraordinary amount of recorded music over the last few years has yet to be released. So who's in a hurry...?
"CARPATHIANA stands out among the numerous dance world music performers by the fact that instead of the mere use of samples, the band performs all the ethnical parts live", the Polish music magazine "Plastik" characterized the first album of the band. Although the music is essentially dance orientated using contemporary styles, the overall sound is a mixture of western dance rhythms and traditional Ukrainian melodies. Likewise, songs feature both English and Ukrainian lyrics. Nevertheless, all the songs are original, and a brand new album 'Eat My Borsch' was released at the beginning of 2008 through Atlantic records in Ukraine.The disk also includes a new promo' video for the re-worked song 'Harasd', which recently reached the №37 spot in the world music genre of 'American Idol Underground'. Particulary unusual, as the band are neither American nor idols, including the fact that Carpathiana front-man, song-writer and producer, Yuri Baliuk has never been to 'the states' but spends as much time in his native Ukraine these days as in Britain. Nevertheless, to celebrate the album release, a newly designed Carpathiana website www.carpathiana.com has been created....
