When everything began, Antoine Kerninon (drums) and Benoit Guivarch (lead vocals, guitar) formed Sherrylyn in Quimper (a small city located in Brittany, France). Inspired by the noisy sounds of Ride, Sonic Youth, and Mogwai, as well as calmer music such as Kat Onoma and Arab Strap, the band discovered its own voice, recorded an EP in Brest, and started out on the local scene.
In 2001, Benoit moved to Paris to work on a new project, called Carp. Inspired by his experiences in Glasgow and Sheffield, a definitively more intimate and somber music surfaced. For his part, Antoine discovered the Canadian underground scene during the year he spent in Ottawa and Montreal. In 2003, he joined Carp, which at the time counted among its members two new musicians, Arnaud Betrom (bass), and Julien Choukroun (guitar). With Valerie Guillot (keyboards, chimes), they played several times on Parisian stages (GlazArt, Studios Campus, PopIn).
In February 2004, the group was invited to participate in the Festival Panoramas8, with Cyann & Ben, Rodolphe Burger, Alain Bashung and RZA, among others. After this, they recorded several songs for their self-produced EP, on which Melanie Pain (Villeneuve, Nouvelle Vague) contributed.
Today, Carp has a few new faces again, with the arrival of Julien Ribeill (guitar), Fabrice Maria (bass) and Sylvain Griotto. Their influences have turned North (Sigur Ros, Silver Mount Zion, Nick Cave, Low) and old school (Neil Young, the band, the last Beatles, Nick Drake,...). They have signed onto the new French indie label, Squaredogs. The first album was released on october 2006. Today, a second LP is ready!
