Carrie Johnson - Guitars and Vocals and all songwriting. I LOVE my band!! Not only are they talented and creative musicians, they are all great men and wonderful friends. Gary Barton on drums, Len Bobinski on bass and David Martin on lead guitar!!
Influences
Growing up with a mother who was into show tunes and a father who played the bagpipes my early influences were varied. Bluegrass to classical to rock to The Sound of Music and all in between (then mix that up with African drumming songs too and it's totally confusing!) I'm a sucker for a great pop melody - but when it comes to lyrics I tend to enjoy a more cryptic display. When I write, I tend to stick to the moment - what's going on in my life - but...If you're my man, friend or sibling, you KNOW I'm going to write a song about you.
Sounds Like
"...it's dynamics are diverse, and several tracks convey the energy Johnson emits at a live show, where she is known to sometimes attack her acoustic guitar in a way that would make the heaviest rocker proud, as razor-thin picks are all that keep the wood and bronze wires from imploding on impact"
John Fitz - Hartford/Simsbury Post
CARRIE JOHNSON is a singer/songwriter who has been performing since the age of nine. Her first public appearance was on a television show called Mamba
Laeo in Kenya, East Africa where she spent much of her childhood.
A diverse musical background - from the folk singer influences of her mother
to attending Berklee College of Music; writing/singing for a Boston based
punk band to professional background/jingle singer, rhythm guitar player &
songwriter - led the way to forming the band 22 BRIDES with her sister
Libby. Released on the Zero Hour/Universal record labels, 22 BRIDES' albums
were critically acclaimed for their unconventional harmonies, swirling
folk/rock melodies and sophisticated lyrics. They were the featured artists
three times in BILLBOARD MAGAZINE, were guests on the WORLD CAFE and landed
a leg of the LILITH FAIRE tour in 1998 - the same summer that their song,
"Another Distant Light" broke on 99X in Atlanta. Endless touring
encompassed everything from coffeehouse gigs to festivals - headlining as
well as opening for other artists including the Goo Goo Dolls, Ani Defranco,
Lisa Loeb, Dick Dale and Freedy Johnston.
Taking a break from NYC, Carrie moved to Tempe, AZ for awhile and in between
touring with 22 BRIDES, began performing in the area as an acoustic solo act. She
received critical acclaim in the Phoenix area and was also voted the best
female vocalist in the PHOENIX TRIBUNE "Best of 2000" contest.
Another move found Carrie on the East Coast again - this time in Blacksburg,
VA. "I was dying to get into a studio to record some new songs and found
the most amazing players in those Blue Ridge Mountains. I released my first
solo cd, GEOGRAPHICAL FIX. The songs are a slice of my life over the years
of moving around this country and the heartache and happiness that comes
from that."
Now based in the Hartford, CT area, Carrie released her second solo cd, MOVE THE SUN in September. "I started this album with my good friend and guitarist, Burt Teague but also wanted to work with my brother, Daniel Wise (Producer for Naked Brothers Band) so I co-produced with both! The album is jangly, loud, soft, intimate, in your face and very much a labor of love. I'm a lover of pop melody & cryptic lyrics - so I try to incorporate that in my music. Rock, folk, bluegrass - all genres are in my blood and my music.
This album is especially important to me because I am donating ALL proceeds from the song "Little Bird" to Pediatric Cancer Reasearch to honor my daughter (diagnosed 3 years ago with Ovarian cancer - currently in recovery) and every other child undergoing cancer treatment". "MOVE THE SUN" IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE ON ITUNES, AND ALL DIGITAL MUSIC DOWNLOAD SITES AND ON CARRIE'S WEBSTORE - WWW.CARRIEJOHNSONMUSIC.COM!
Carrie is also part of the songwriting team for the feature animated film, FERRETINA, a Frank Avianca Production. Carrie wrote and co-wrote several songs for the movie,
and after appearing at the Cann Film Festival in 2007, a fall 2009
release of the film is planned!!
The Carrie Johnson band performs in the Hartford area and on the East Coast regularly and is currently touring for MOVE THE SUN.
With a raw pop/folk edge and high energy, Carrie Johnson's style is both intense
yet intimate. Her songs tell stories, her voice and guitar playing insist
that you listen - the outcome - DYNAMIC!!
