About me:
This is the Carry On Forever MySpace page, infact we are the only MySpace page that is based on the highly successful films, any questions or any help you need regarding the films, just ask!
The Carry On Story:
In 1955 a film under the working title of “The National Service Story” was written by R. F Delderfield, the treatment was overseen by Sydney Box (Peter Roger’s’ Brother-in-Law), but it was later abandoned.
Sydney commissioned Delderfield to re-write the screenplay, at this time the film was now known as “The Bull Boys”, Sydney was looking for some financial backing for the film and Peter Rogers took over the helm, he eventually asked scriptwriter John Antrobus to turn it into a comedy, however this did not meet Rogers approval.
The script was then handed to the man who would create the birth of Britain’s best loved comedy team, Norman Hudis. Carry On Sergeant was born…
The popularity of Sergeant, encouraged Rogers to plan ahead, no sooner Carry On Nurse was completed he already had Teacher, Constable and Regardless planned, Rogers could see a series projecting. In 1962 Hudis left the Carry ..ersue continued success in America, leaving the series without a scriptwriter, however in came Talbot Rothwell, the backbone to the next twenty Carry On’s, he started with Carry On Cabby (1963) and was to stay until Carry On Dick (1974), when ill health forced him to stop writing.
There was a change in 1966 when Peter Rogers left film distributors Anglo Amalgamated, Stuart Levy (Head of Anglo) had died, and Nat Cohen (Anglo) decided that the Carry On’s were not involved with Anglo’s Future plans.
The next 2 Carry On’s would be filmed by the Rank Organisation without the Carry On banner, Don’t Lose Your Head and Follow That Camel were both equally as successful, but Rank soon realised that the last two films were initially Carry On’s and decided the series would continue with the Carry On banner again from Carry On Doctor.
By 1975 the Carry On’s were losing their touch with the cinema and it’s audiences, the British sex wave was sweeping across the land, and the series was battling against sex comedies like “Confessions of a Window Cleaner” and “Adventures of a Plummer’s Mate”.
The Carry On’s were struggling to beat the box office ratings and despite new scriptwriters and more nudity appearing in the films, it wasn’t enough to save them.
However Rogers was not going to give up without a fight and after the disappointing Carry On England, Rogers decided it was time the Carry On’s turned up the heat. Arriving on the scene was Carry On Emmannuelle, with only a handful of regulars and sexy newcomer Suzanne Danielle, the film was given an AA (15) certificate, which meant the film was not suitable for family viewing, which lost a large proportion of it’s audience, the final nail was nailed into the coffin..
Despite rumours after Emmannuelle of new scripts being brought to Rogers attention, nothing surfaced until some 14 years later when Rogers teamed up with a bunch of new recruits to sail the seas in Carry On Columbus, bringing together faces of British comedy. Rik Mayall, Richard Wilson, Alexi Sayle and Julian Clary were aboard along with fellow Carry On Stalwarts Jim Dale, Jack Douglas, Bernard Cribbins, Leslie Phillips, June Whitfield and Peter Gilmore. However the film could not restore the magic of the glory days and was to sink without trace and became a commercial failure.
In early 2003, a new film was announced, in the name of Carry On London, a small cast was assembled, most of which left the film as the film barely got off the ground. It was not until late 2007 that the film was yet again back on the cards, claims were made that the film had gone into pre production, any further plans have yet still to be announced and the future of a new Carry On still looks bleak!
