GeneralMusic, songwriting, recording, playing guitar, the science, the architecture, the science fiction (this doesn't include Star Trek, though I don't hate Star Trek), hiking and bicycling (though I don't do nearly enough of either), the history, the politics, Macintosh computers, huge ancient obsolete computers which take up two buildings such as S.A.G.E. (Google it; you won't believe it);

beautiful, intelligent women;

long, low '50's cars with huge tailfins;

environmental issues (yeah, so the last two are a contradiction. Let he who has no contradictions speak against me);

beautiful intelligent women who love caressing long, low fifties cars with huge tailfins:

There you go.

Old tape machines are a good thing to have around if you wanna record the rock and the roll.

You just can't have enough microphones, either. I like electronics, and every now and then, I'll pick up a soldering iron. Here are some plans for a project I'm going to build:

Beer is one damn hell of a great thing, especially the incredible pale ale. Sierra Nevada is the best, but Yazoo Brewery seems to be giving it a run for its money lately. Lessee... I've always liked record players, especially portable '50's-era ones. I love the Russian language, and I can still muddle along in conversational Russian.

The one above says, I think, "What the October Revolution has Given the Workers and Peasants."

This one says (again not entirely sure since my Russian is rusty) "We Shall Sacrifice for the Building of Socialism" and below "8 Million tons of Iron". Ain't Socialist Realism posters just incredible? I think so. I suppose this list wouldn't be complete without mentioning that I love vacuum tubes and their various electronic devices: amps,
stereos, radios, etc. If you don't know what vacuum tubes are, here are some now:
.
Get to know me and you will receive a free vacuum tube lecture. The brief version of this lecture is: vacuum tube audio devices sound fantastic. Listen to one today and you will lose your shit.

Update: I have now decided to top all of the above with an unbeatable combination:

That's right, it's a beauiful girl in a '59 Buick with huge tailfins (actually she's a little obscured by the wrap-around windshield), as featured in a Russian-language brochure made by General Motors for a Moscow exhibition in 1959. Apparently we wanted to show the Russians how much more gasoline we could consume than they could. Looking at the picture, I think it may have worked. Anyway, you may have to look closely at the writing but it's Russky alright. And of course you can bet your ass that Electra 225 has a vacuum tube "WonderBar" auto-seek radio. Yes, I said auto-seek. Yes, I said 1959. I've seen one and they hone in on a station automatically and sound great.
Yes. All vacuum tube. ~{8^>)
MusicIn no particular order whatsoever: Beck, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Elvis Presley, The Features, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Pretty Things, The Faces, The Small Faces, Dmitri Shostokovich, George Gershwin, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, John Mayall (and of course the Bluesbreakers), the Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, Pavement, the Flaming Lips, the Beatles (perhaps this should be in some kind of order... well, if it were the Beatles would be way up there), the Stones, Nick Drake, Harry Nilsson, Sly and the Family Stone, Paul McCartney's solo stuff, Elvis Costello, Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Polvo, Wilco, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Blind Faith, Traffic (when Steve Winwood was still with them), Stevie Wonder (up to and including Songs in the Key of Life), just about any damned Motown but especially Smoky Robinson and the Miracles, early Jackson Five, the Temptations (what a great name for a vocal group... look at it again. Great name), Hank Williams Sr. (love love love this guy), the Del McCoury Band, the Andrews Sisters, Count Basie, Count Bass-D (howdy Mr Spitz), Self, Fluid Ounces, Sloan, the Katies, Glossary, The Whole Fantastic World, The Meters, Duke Ellington, just about any good big band that swings hard from the late 30's through the mid 60's, The Kinks (last but most certainly not least: damn, you gotta love the Kinks). Update: Wilco. My Morning Jacket. Laws Rushing (sorry I forgot you guys, Laws-- please forgive me). Update: Air. Komeda. The Cardigans. Radiohead. David Bowie. Dungen (pronounced "doon-ghin" and meaning "of dung") a Swedish Elephant6-type band but maybe a little different in that they're, uh, Swedish. Speaking of Elephant6: Beulah, Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Apples In Stereo... hell, all of 'em. Now I'm in NewPop world, so I'm thinking Imagine Asians and De Novo Dahl, which are both incredible, feel-good hits of the summer.
MoviesBest Movie Ever: Harold & Maude. Funniest Movies Ever: 1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail 2. Raising Arizona 3. The Blues Brothers -- I guess The Big Lebowski, also. Then you have your classics. North by Northwest, all your Hitchcock, your Polanski, your Fellini, your Ingmar Bergman (which reminds me, let's not forget the highly exciting and lovely Ingrid Bergman). Jimmy Stewart rocks. Cary Grant rocks. Catherine Hepburn is rockin'. Ever seen "Arsenic and Old Lace"? Hilarious. Cary Grant in one of his finest comedic roles. I sure did like "Titanic"-- but hey, of course it wasn't a good movie. It was a great amusement park ride, though. But that's all I expected: an amusement park ride. And hey, we got to see Kate Winslett get herself a little portrait painted. Highly enjoyable. I sure did like "Twelve Monkeys" a lot. "Fight Club" rocked. Update: Stanley Kubrick. How I forgot this guy is beyond me. Also: those Michael Caine spy films from the 60's and 70's. Harry somethingorother was his name. You know, I really didn't care much for "Citizen Kane". Huh. Maybe I need to watch it again, but I wish I hadn't known the ending beforehand. "Star Wars" Episodes IV, V, and VI well, VI would've been better if they'd stuck with wookies instead of ewoks. UPDATE: Episode III was killer. Thanks, George. "Lord of the Rings". All of 'em incredible. But you knew that. And last but not least, "Reefer Madness". Update: The Royal Tannenbaums. Run, Ronnie, Run. Napoleon Dynamite. The Jerk. Young Frankenstein (er, Frahnkenshteen). The Incredibles. Kill Bill I and II.
TelevisionMost of the time, this is the best thing on TV: When something good is on it's usually the following: Frontline, the cutting-edge weekly news program. Deadwood, the western mini-series on HBO. John Stewart and the Daily Show Fake Newsmakers. Seinfeld. The Simpsons. Family Guy. Adult Swim; more specifically Sealab 2021, Aqua-Teen Hunger Force and the Venture Brothers. Mr. Show. Tenacious D. NOVA. American Experience (on PBS, fucking incredible). Antiques Roadshow has a similar valium-like quality to that of Bob Ross' painting show, which I enjoy sometimes. The old Bob Newhart show. The new Bob Newhart show. The '60's Batman series. The '50's Twilight Zone series. The Ed Sullivan Show. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
BooksZen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Slaughterhouse Five, Out of the Silent Planet, Anna Karenina, Suttree, Dave Barry Does Japan, Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations, Player Piano, Brave New World, anything by Mr Aldous Huxley, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Bluebeard, really anything by Kurt Vonnegut, and what was that newer novel Ken Kesey put out? I liked that one. About the people in Alaska in the little town that got invaded by some Hollywood film production. Anything by Isaac Asimov, pretty much, though it's really been awhile. Raisa Berg wrote a great book about being a geneticist in the Soviet Union called "Acquired Traits" which was, believe it or not, riveting. Oh, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, speaking of Russians. Tolstoy's short stories were great. Steve Martin's book "Pure Drivel" was freaking hilarious. James Baldwin is one of the greatest writers and thinkers ever to grace this earth. And how could I forget "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", "So Long and Thanks for all the Fish", "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe", etc. by Douglas Adams? I wish I were more well-versed in the classics. I wish I could discuss Plato's "Republic" and know what the hell I'm talking about. I did read "A Tale of Two Cities" and it was fantastic. Also, "The Gulag Archipelago" is unbelievable. And, after reading Andrew's books section I have to throw in "Fahrenheit 451" and Ray Bradbury. Forgot about that Bradbury guy. Love Him. OK, update: William Manchester. Great historical writer. Wrote "The Last Lion", Vols. I and II, an unbelievably great biography of Winston Churchill. Just died, but they're going to finish Vol. III for him based on his bathroom scrawlings or something. Also a great historical writer: whatshername. Can't remember right now; she wrote "The Guns of August" and "The March of Folly". I'll remember later. Oh, wait... Barbara Tuchman. Yeah. Also whathisname, the guy with the McGruff Crime Dog voice. Heck. What did he write? Damn. Tough-sounding name like Brillopad Holdenguns, or maybe Leviathan T. Bronson, served in World War II, wrote about the Pacific theatre, still around; anyone wanna guess? Good writer, though not as good as Tuchman or Manchester. Bill Bryson: "In A Sunburnt Country", and "A Walk in the Woods". Especially, "I'm A Stranger Here Myself".
Heroes Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, Raisa Berg (who's she? I guess you could always Google it up and find out). Boris Yelstin (yes, Boris Yeltsin. Remember that tank? Nobody seems to remember the speech on the tank anymore). Lech Walesa. Pope John Paul II. Most ordinary Russians. Federico Fellini. Rosa Parks. Martin Luther King, Jr. Frank Lloyd Wright. Virgil Exner. Jerry Garcia. Erwin Rommel (for trying to assassinate Hitler: good go, ol' boy). Giordano Bruno. Gallileo Gallilei. Albert Einstein. Steven Hawking. John Coltrane. Miles Davis. Jackie Robinson. Lou Gehrig. James Baldwin. My parents and my brother Sean.

About me:

..

I'll try to keep things brief: for those of you who know me, you know that's not going to be easy.

I was born in a volcano

...and raised by a pack of wild jellyfish. Most folks, upon hearing this, ask themselves: "But aren't all jellyfish, in fact, tame?" Shockingly, and contrary to popular myth, the answer is a resounding no. There *are* some wild jellyfish left. Most, of course, were domesticated by the ancient Phoenicians, and have been cuddling happily with us humans ever since, guarding the liquor while we're away, and providing us with joy and companionship. Even landlords who are opposed to some of the more "out there" kind of pets/ companions such as the dog or the cat will happily make an exception for the trustworthy and noble jellyfish. Aside from the ho-hum, standard upbringing by a pack of wild jellyfish in a volcano my life is pretty crazy. I live in a recording studio. Isn't that crazy? See that black-and-white photo of me taken by someone who obviously knows how to use a camera? That's my house! Crazy, huh? Not many folks have four Ampex multitrack recorders in their house, but I have chosen. I have boldly chosen to have four Ampex tape recorders, each the size of an average county in Nebraska, in my house.
Believe me, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking: "Doesn't Nebraska have townships?" No, it doesn't, it has counties. Pennsylvania has townships.
Who I'd like to meet:
More folks like Bingham Barnes and Kelley Anderson. And Chuck Bruner, you too. More people like the friends I'm extraordinarily lucky to know already. See below.

Man I want to record an album with you so bad. Things are a little less complicated in some areas, but even more in others. But I still know that it must happen. I'm so serious too.
