My family and upbringing remain in Australia incorporating a mixture of country Victorian childhood, Melbourne adolescence and a more recent injection of laid-back Queensland.
My Mum wants to be my manager and my brother is my best promoter. My Dad just wants me to get my arse into gear! I myself am not sure where the hell this path will take me but i know i love this stuff way more than working in a bloody office with the rest of the rat race!
Recently I watched about 300 people get off the tube in London, where i currently live, at about 6pm on the Northern Line all straight-faced heading home southbound from work. At the same time my good mate and budding sound engineer Pete Hope and i walked north, completely alone, immaturely pissing ourselves with laughter about nothing toward our northbound train to Camden to buy some funky looking sheets for our new loft studio.
Needless to say, this scene epitomised where I'm at with my chosen path and what i think all of us in the music/arts industry or self-employed hope to achieve if only complete personal fulfillment. Really we're just a minority with the guts to take a chance at the expense of often not pulling in a steady and comfortable income but with 100 times the passion and satisfaction in what we do! And believe me, it took me a few years of being an employee to work this out.
The truth is that it took the 2 of us this long to actually start getting things done that day as we're both probably guilty of waking up sometimes and helping ourselves to a small teaspoon of uselessness at the start of a day. We both felt a sense of laziness, but the reality is that, although I immediately could have felt a wave of guilt sweep across me, I felt nothing but an organic feeling of satisfaction!
The other truth is that this took me far too long to write. Probably over half an hour. that should have and would have taken most people about 3 minutes! I guess that's what makes me a song-writer and not a corporate CEO!
So my point... do what you love and don't make your career a 'job'!!
hahaha, nice. It was pretty funny... at the start of the scene James and I both go "hah, Tom Carty" as in.. hey, that guys looks like Tom Carty... then we kind of both leant forward and went, "hang on, that *IS* Tom Carty!" :p
Hello to all, Just thought we'd stop by and say thank you ,to all the awesome bands that have sent in their material which has been aired on the show throughout the years.
We have had an exceptional response through myspace from some of the most talented underground musicians in the world . It is your contribution to our show that show people that there are still actually real musicians out there [and rap is surely not damn music, neither is that techno crap].
Undergroundsounds airs throughout Australia Thursday/Saturdays p.m.
Bands that would like their music aired on any future shows can forward their material to the address below;
Undergroundsounds Program Manager 44 Bambil St, Crestmead,Queensland. Australia.
