  • Bio

Carved in ashes is a Finnish band that plays alternative progressive metal with influences from old-school- prog and rock, doom, gothic metal and vaguely weird vibes from various ethnic traditions. The band was formed in 2009 after two jamming groups decided that one plus one means one; Lauri Kuussalo and Tomi Issakainen had been playing together for several years before they united tunes with Kimmo Kokki, with whom Lauri had been crafting similar songs after their mutual band had fallen into stasis. Lauri arranged rehearsals together with Tomi and Kimmo, and it turned out that the trio was like-minded, and they started to search for similar musicians to flesh out the band. After a while Kimmo received an e-mail from a troubadour from a distant Mediterranean peninsula, and the trio was convinced by their future Spanish lead singer Juanma Draven. Quickly after this Jaakko Kuusisto added his 5 strings bass sound, and Jani Lehtinen with his versatile keyboard tunes also joined the band. On the 17th of January 2010 the band went into the studio in Helsinki's Sibelius Academy to record three songs, which the band colloboratively built fairly quickly from the band members' song stashes. The time frame in the studio was wide because of the differences in timetables, but eventually the songs came to see the light of day or, rather, emerged forth into the fittingly melancholic, dark and beautiful Finnish landscapes on the very verge of fall. The recording was mixed and recorded by Markus Bonsdorff and mastered in Argentina in the La Nave De Oseberg studio by Martin Toledo. A talented violinist, Camilla Bckman from the Sibelius Academy, recorded the violin parts for the song "And it Remains". The cover art was concocted by Antti Kuussalo. Carved in ashes released their three song demonstration "Neversary"on the 11th of August in Myspace. From Neversary you will be able to get some idea of their sound which the band themselves usually cannot really describe in words when asked, but it is a mixture of an atmospheric and progressive dialogue with a Spanish tinge to it.
