He’s very humble, loyal and honest. Loves his family and seeks people with the same values and just tries to live life the right way. DJA loves life and music as it’s his main passion in life and works real hard to achieve those goals. Since his initial professional introduction to the music DJ industry back in the early eighties, music was already, a part of his life since birth. Everyone in his family were, musicians performing regularly in rnb/soul/jazz/ballroom bands around the traps.
At 6 his interest in rhythm and beats which he did with his mothers knitting needles, was noticed by the band members while they practiced & jammed every week. He was given, drumsticks and became the novelty act for the band. Sunday was a regular gospel event day, ending up singing in the choir at a very young age, again being noticed and asked to perform at functions and weddings.
Years later, playing in different bands after school and buying records from underground stores and eventually going to clubs as soon as he became of age, the infuences of mostly Black American Artists already a part of him. Stevie Wonder,Louise Armstrong,Luther Vandross,Anita Baker,Nat King Cole,Chaka Khan,Prince, The Temptations,George Benson,Bozz Scaggs,Michael Jackson,Earth Wind & Fire,The Jacksons to Zapp,Gap band,Soul II Soul, The Temptations to Teddy Riley to name a few.
“It may seem like the 80’s was a longtime ago, but you only have to turn the dial and every other song is sampling the original stuff from back in the day, which goes to show how current it all really is!
I’ve been blessed to have been considered such an influence and honored just to still be a part of what I love doing, which come by being honest, reliable and on top of things. I would play to a PARTY OF 5 COZ IN MY HEAD I AM THE AUDIENCE TO THESE ARTISTS I'M SPINNING, I'M ON CLOUD NINE, I LOVE THE MUSIC SO MUCH!!” Says, DjA Ortell.
With so many aspiring DJs on the rise, DjA tells of the pros and cons to DJ infamy.
“People need to be entertained, my mission is to get your back up off the wall, be genuine and honest when it comes to the crowd and love people like we’re all family, that’s the longevity of a good DJ, he says.“
Something else that a lot of DJs forget to do is to DJ for the love of it, put your heart and soul into your music and your sets, practice constantly and do it with a passion and not only for money – Respect others and expect nothing less in return!
Apply this to your Djing and business management skills and choose your associates wisely. Do not compromise your integrity it’s one that I made sure I adhered to very early in the game!”
RNB/SOUL/FUNK was sadly never part of the mainstream RADIO genre in AUSTRALIA and in Y2K NO better today unless its a community based radio. TV-VIDEO has forced "their" hand to at least play the chart topping commercial hits on radio..??
Back in the day Melbourne’s only venue for RNB / FUNK / SOUL / REGGAE was an underground club called CASABLANCA. The ORIGINAL followed by the rest.Here DJA became part of a handfull who PIONEERED the scene of today - Greek George (Much love), South African Mick Williams(Brutha from another mutha),Silky, John Casa(Billboard)Ray Shirley(Silvers Sundays) were his Dj friends, associates and inspirations.
Saying that being creative behind the decks, had nothing to do with $ the priviledge to play and expose the crowds to all these amazing artist, were so satisfying. Fate had it that DJ ANSELL would become an integral part of the scene for a decade and in a short period changing it forever and putting what has, now become RNB / HIP HOP / OL SKOOL scene on the map,
In demand he selectively criss crossed Melbourne's club circuit and 5 Star hotels O/Seas. Still contributing & fired up about the way things has to be! The joy of creativity, music a connection that brings euphoric excitement, yet peace and harmony to man.
Dealing only with the facts has caused him to avoid the current scene purely as it has become mostly about, money, me, myself, & I, orientated instead of the passion that gets misconstrued with caring about the music and people that enjoy it for what it’s meant to be “GOOD TIMES” a track by CHIC, that DJA used to implement into his sets, by rappin’ over it to bring the crowd to another level.
Wayne Fernandez used to emulate DJA and even surpass his own dreams, someone that DJ Ansell still have fond memories of and hope the current players should recognise, without the true pioneers of the past our present ones should be humbled by facts and embrace it all, a healthy attitude is a creative mind, a bad one a disaster.
Clubs were like having house parties you knew everyone and had fun together every week,Never ever needing anything else but MUSIC to get high! hence, The Place..The Party…The People…The Music! Starting off the nite with Outstanding by the Gap Band and dropping MORE BOUNCE by ZAPP mid set when no one else even knew who these artist were, these classics became his signature with his then Dj partner. A very unique partnership that became defunct by the ever increasing popularity of DJA, which still uneases him today.
His NO LIERS or PRETENDERS attitude has earned him respect from everyone within the biz and personal life.
It’s always been DJA’s goal to try and stay true to real R&B, SOUL and FUNK music,.. His aspirations might have seemed like a lofty ambition, but the longevity of his career is a testament to the purity of his vision.
THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE "MORE BOUNCE" CONCEPT which has become an extrodinary entity on it's own as it was meant to be all about the essence of a period in time, the artist and their music...THE TIMELESS CLASSICS and those DJ's who were there!! like ROGER TROUTMAN said DOIN' IT ROGER BABY DOIN' IT.Peace to those who still are keepin it real. MORE BOUNCE is dedicated to the memory of all the great artist that are still living their dream and those whom are no longer with us!
In an industry that has a fast turnaround of Dj’s vying to be the next storm in a teacup, it’s enduring that Ashan Ansell Ortell is still a serious part of the scene after so many years.
Refusing to sugarcoat his feelings of superiority and slight jealousy ..
There will always be some one who will try to taint those with pure intentions, its part of life.
He realized that sometimes he’s, his own worst enemy. All his relationships family, friends, business or personal has been affected by his unrelenting Do the right thing and be decent and respectable to all and expect nothing less in return attitude….Always genuine and with a sense of humour.
