Imagine a punk rock that’s covered in ice and frozen beer and yellow snow: trading the standoffish bullet-belted Mohican sound and image of the spirit of ’77 for one adorned with plaid shirts and cheap cigarettes comes Gold Rush, a three-piece rock band that makes the kind of punk that could only come from the wintry flatlands of Northern Alberta. It gets so cold here you could die.
The drumming of Jon Mick stands buried in the back of the room, clawing its way up through the ground to the ears of the earth while Owen Strasky’s bass is like a ghost in a dusty old machine. The voice of Trevor Rutley is like a howl from beyond the grave. Gold Rush fights through layers of tape hiss and digital distortion; half of the record recorded on cassette tape and the other half channeled through mixing boards and hard drives, all pegged in the red, all steaming forward, melting the analogue ice that stands in its way.
