Cast in Stone was founded by Nolan, Nate and Brandon in 2005. An accomplished lead player with classical training, Nolan had played in many western Canadian bands over the years. His dizzying solos can be found throughout CIS's material. He and Brandon, who came out of the local Calgary hardcore scene soon met Nate and formed Cast in Stone. A talented bass player in his own right, Nate got his start playing in bands in Texas. After writing together as three piece, they soon realized the need for a dynamic guitarist to complete the rhythm section. Enter Kris. Nolan had known Kris for years and knew his dedication, style and commanding stage presence would compliment the band. Soon after talks, Kris moved to Calgary to Join CIS. Writing and jamming commenced while the search for the right front man began. Many frustrating auditions later, John answered an ad on a local Calgary metal forum. An audition was set up and John travelled to Calgary to Jam with the band. Two days and countless beers later, the line up was complete. His dark and sometimes agony inspired lyrics, along with unpredictably painful stage antics were the right fit. John made plans to move to Calgary.
After about a year of writing and getting their set as tight as possible, CIS recorded a three song demo and took Calgary by storm with their high energy live show. In Late 2008, the band recorded their debut EP titled “The Machine” acquiring the services of Jeff Muller of Alchemy studios. The EP was released in Late August of 2008. Shortly after the release, founding members Nate and Brandon announced their departure from the band. The remaining members wished them luck in their future endeavors but knew they must forge on. 2009 would open up with the search for a new drummer and bass player. Stay tuned!
