What do you get when you bring together a reeking, long-haired transient, a self-confessed pathetic geek, a narcissistic ex-hockey player, and a shambling, shiftless alcoholic? No, its not a new sitcom on UPN. What you get is the most ridiculously pimped-out, rockin', explosive, mind-numbing, sexually charged spectacle in the history of music. The Cast of Characters - a corrosive blend of circus-like showmanship and blaring, tuneless rawk and riz-oll, a band forged in the fires of Mordor possessing a power so terrible that it could destroy the whole of Middle Earth, a group that will stop at nothing to ensure that the average concertgoer's blank stare of indifference melts into a warm smile. Or, as is more often the case, a scowl of disgust.
Cast of Characters came into existence in 1980, when JC Penney - widely acknowledged to be a living God - dribbled out of a uterus and started riffing on the electric bass. A psychic bond was quickly developed between Penney and the other, more disposable members of the band (Cypress, Bucketz, and the guy with the freakin' helmet) and through sheer fate they met and started the band twenty-two years later in Bellingham, WA, a city whose entire population consists of college students and serial killers. The musical entity called Cast of Characters has since played more than a hundred shows, released a wretched album and some decent demos, forced two nightclubs into foreclosure, and broke an innumerable number of hearts.
So if you want the best that the genre of serious rock mixed with covers of rap songs and jokey, self-referential reggae and endless stage banter and occasional silly outfits has to offer, come see the COC play or download some of our tunes.
