Catalyst was founded in June 2004 by Sujay (Guitars), Moses (Drums) and Suneil (Bass) with the underlying intention to introduce a new genre of music, Symphonic Metal.
The band began with an intra college competition in Christ College where they covered Nightwish which still continues to influence every member of the band. Other influences include Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation. In the years 2004 and 2005, the band comprised of Lydia (Vocals), Swaroop (Keyboards) and Sandeep(Bass) along with Sujay, Suneil and Moses.
In the year 2006, Sruthi (Keyboards) joined the band. This year also saw the band trying out various different vocalists.However, it wasn't until Nisha (Vocals) joined the band in 2007 as vocalist, did Catalyst find a comfortable foothold and a sound that stuck out as unique in their compositions.
The year proved to be a fruitful one as Catalyst took off to outstation locations such as Pondicherry (JIPMER-Spandan 2007) where the band won the Best Own Composition and the Best Keyboardist Category, and Surathkal (NIT-K-Incident ’08) to participate in various competitions. The band also played in Unwind Center’s Underground 2007 winning the Best Vocalist and the Best Keyboardist Category in the Metal Group. The popular single, “Midnight Zone” was also received with enthusiasm as it made it to the Strawberry Fields CD and was aired on Radio Indigo in Bangalore. The band went on to reach the Strawberry Fields finals, winning the Best College Band category. The band also played a fundraiser event in Bishop Cottons Girls School as well as a few shows in Unwind Center toward the end of the year.
Catalyst began 2008 by winning a few inter collegiate competitions Scintillation (JNC) and Cul-Ah( Mount Carmel College).The band continued with what can only be described as an eventful year by reaching the finals of BMSCE’s Whiplash 2008 and winning Noiseyard 2008 conducted by BIT.
Over the years, Catalyst has established itself as a fairly accomplished band known for its contribution to the metal scene in Bangalore and the different genre that it promotes. The band hopes to play as many shows as possible and eventually release an album.
