Catamount rings aggressive progressive mainly vocal-less instrumental metal with precision and prowess. With influences that sound a range from Yes, Rush, Metallica, and Dream Theatre, Catamount infuses a thrash/metal seasoning to what is ultimately accomplished instrumental rock. The record, "Public Displays of Private Delusions", opens with "Classic Yello", a 7/8 4/8 groove - and some of the only lyrics heard on the CD with a scream of ’classic fucking yellow’. The band shines and is as tight as we’ve heard. The third track, "Sasquatch", gives us a Steve Howe-ish guitar compositional philosophy - creatively interesting and melodic, with technically difficult clean flurries in a mystical setting - wonderful. The record moves into "The Legend of Tits McGee" with more alternative time challenges and stunning performances. Track 6, "George Papdapolis", showcases the fluid lead guitar performance of the pair Schultz/Schneider. The final track, "The Dealbreaker", is another exercise in the union of a band - the ending of the tune, mp3’d here as a clip, is strong - ultimately leaving the listener breathless.

The beauty of instrumental music is lyrics can’t tell listeners what a
particular song is about. Therefore, bands like Catamount can give
their songs titles like "George Papadopolis" and it doesn’t make them
any less serious. As far as we can tell the "instrometal" (though
lyrics are occasionally used) band took Public Displays Of Private
Delusion very seriously because it’s an impressive effort. Unlike most
of their instrumental peers who generally ease on and off heaviness,
bludgeoning is the name of the game throughout these seven tracks.
