Hudson, New York 1965. The Dave Clark Five were in town, on their way to do a show at the RPI Field House in Troy, New York. They stayed overnight at the Royalton Motor Inn on Warren Street, a 15 minute walk from my house. I didn't find out about it until the next day. When I did I went up to the Royalton and stood in the small lobby. Less than 24 hours before they had been there, in the same place I was now standing ...Dave, Lenny, Mike, Rick and Denny. I was almost 11 years old and had been taking guitar lessons since The Beatles came to the U.S. in February, 1964. Lenny Davidson was my hero, right along with George Harrison. Like thousands of boys, and more girls than you would guess, I wanted to be in a band, or as it was called back then, a group, just like The Beatles, just like The Dave Clark Five. I went home and practiced very hard that day back in 1965.
Hamburg, Germany 1996. I was drinking a beer in the Gretel and Alphonse right across the street from Grosse Freiheit 36 where I would take the stage in a few hours with my band now signed to a small Hamburg label, the stage right upstairs from the Kaiserkeller. After 31 years Suzie B. Goode had come true.
My band, Susan and the SurfTones, along with originals, recorded covers by the bands that lit the fire back in the 1960's...bands that, as Tom Hanks said at the DC5's Hall of Fame Induction in 2008, made a joyful sound. On Bitchin', our third Gee-Dee release, we recorded the DC5's Chaquita.
Recently, Avory and I recorded 50 instro versions of Beatle tunes. You can hear some of them at our Dear Prudence myspace page. We then turned our attention to that other great British band, The Dave Clark Five. Here at our Catch'65 page are the results. We hope you enjoy it. We owe these guys big time for making that joyful sound that still gets us through the day.
