Washington, DC’s Cathedral (1991-93) was a pioneer of the early 90’s progressive rock renaissance.
Cathedral was the first band to be signed by the prog label Kinesis (shortly followed by Baltimore's Illuvatar). “Kingdom Of Ends" (1992) and “There In The Shadows” (1993) established the band worldwide as a prog rock contender. Upon the release of "There In The Shadows" the band found itself opening up for Dream Theater. In his book "The Progressive Rock Files" (CG Publishing, 1998) author Jerry Lucky includes Cathedral as a contributing member of the worldwide prog rock legacy. Cathedral took the best of Brit-prog and made it as American as pie.
Shortly after the release of “There in the Shadows” keyboardist Braverman left the group and went on to record the Ad Infinitum studio project in 1998, also released by Kinesis.
The rest of Cathedral regrouped and then performed and recorded as Hip Omelette until the end of 1995. Too prog for the majors and not prog enough for Kinesis, Hip O's self-titled album was never released.
The international Progarchives identifies Cathedral as "Cathedral ‘90’s" so as not to confuse it with the Cathedral that recorded "Stained Glass Stories" back in 1978, known as "Cathedral '70's. Also don’t confuse with Britain’s Cathedral of grindcore fame, also formed in 1991. Who knew?
