My main musical influence has been my flute teacher, Gareth Morris. Andras Adorjan taught me it's ok to take breaths...Michael Cox told me how!...& Peter-Lukas Graf just did it all. J.S.Bach has been a constant friend, Brahms for expression, Finzi makes me think, Elgar for elegance & Tod (Vernon) Handley for honest, accurate & moving music-making....Tod died last year & I miss him. Nature puts everything into perspective......
Music has always been there..from those early schooldays in my home town, Harrrogate, Yorkshire to my adopted Abergavenny home....I know it now pays the bills (well, some of them!) but it's just part of me. Music has never been a competition but a personal challenge & journey. As a child I sang & learnt the flute & piano & by the time I left school it was clear I couldn't do much else! I eventually went to the Royal Academy of Music & studied flute with Gareth Morris who has been one of the most inspirational people in my musical life...sadly, he died recently.
My career had a bumpy start with a bit of a near death experience and although I feel the best is still to come I have had some wonderful experiences. I've played flute in major symphony orchestras, a motley variety of ensembles, & bits on radio & television. I also teach, try to create & try not to say 'no' to any new experience (musically or otherwise!). I will sing solo well in public one day but it may not be in this life! I enjoy live music & my tastes are eclectic. I love to experience music from the visual side score-reading for BBC TV Classical Music productions & opera companies & have become half of a folk duo.
I play on a Stephen Wessel flute which was made for me & a Jack Moore headjoint. ( I also have a Bonneville solid silver flute for sale if anyone's interested!), & a Robert Bigio wooden headjoint & a new set of bansuri indian flutes & some very cheap whistles (but they still cost more than a penny!)
My wish is to give music to people as honestly as possible & to give people a musical experience..& do my best to smile along the way!
