Cathy's Interests
|
| General | I admit I am a dilettante in most subjects. I love to learn, but I get bored easily. I started playing guitar a few years ago, which I now can do just enough to adequately write and perform my own original sweet little folk songs. (Or so kind people tell me.) I love all things which have to do with language and the manipulation thereof. Too often, however, I am the producer of it when I ought rather to be the consumer. | | Music | Rickie Lee Jones, (then in particular order) Aimee Mann, Patti Griffin, Sia, Ani DeFranco, Del Amitri, Corinne Bailey Rae, Richard and Linda Thompson, R.E.M., The Replacements, The Polyphonic Spree, Simon & Grafunkel, Norah Jones, Nanci Griffith, My Morning Jacket, Paul Simon, Arcade Fire, Sarah McLachlan, The Roches, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Vampire Weekend, The Posies, KT Tunstall, Shawn Colvin, CAKE, Gillian Welch, Barenaked Ladies, The Be Good Tanyas, Sinead Lohan, Beth Orton, Laura Love, The Weepies, Feist, Jolie Holland, Diana Krall, Steely Dan, Bruce Cockburn, Dar Williams, Joss Stone, The Golden Palominos, Joanie Mitchell, Lori Carson, Leonard Cohen, Lucinda Williams, Cat Power, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Micheal Penn, Miranda Sex Garden, Willy Porter, , Indigo Girls, Maia Sharp, Was (Not Was), Eddi Reader, Julia Fordham, The Wallflowers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, The Jayhawks, Thomas Dolby, This Mortal Coil, Joe Jackson, Trash Can Sinatras, Fleetwood Mac, Clare Fader, The Decemberists, Madeleine Peyroux, Tom Waits, Todd Rundgren, Elliott Smith, Sting, Jeff Buckley, Suzanne Vega, Tori Amos, Counting Crows, Everything But the Girl, Cowboy Junkies, CSN&Y, Tift Merritt, Cyndi Lauper, The Eagles, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Sundays, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keyes, 70's pop not including disco, and a thousand female singer-songwriters. | | Movies | The Princess Bride, It's a Wonderful Life, All things Looney Tunes, (and then in no particular order) Garden State, Idiocracy, Office Space, Amelie, Secretary, American Beauty, Little Miss Sunshine, 40-Year-Old Virgin, all the Harry Potter Movies, The REAL Star Wars, Blade Runner, Silence of the Lambs, anything PIXAR, most of the Dreamworks animation, many Disney animations, Enchanted, all things Monty Python, most Tom Hanks movies, anything Johnny Depp... pretty much everything my brother hates and not a whole lot he likes. (He's "John" on my friends' list.) | | Television | Venture Brothers is must-see! Saturday Night Live, Daily Show, Colbert Report, My Name is Earl, Dirty Jobs, and documentaries, documentaries, documentaries... I love deep ocean stuff, the Planet Earth series (although it was "science-lite"), Egyptology, Cosmology, Politics, History. | | Books | Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond is a must-read, as is The End of Faith by Sam Harris. I read mostly non-fiction, almost text-bookish stuff... like the "Don't Know Much About..." series (Don't Know Much about the Bible is required reading as well!) OR poetry: anthologies, collections, manuals on style, and anything else pertaining to poetry. | | Heroes | My mom, who is my role model for living bravely with Multiple Sclerosis, and Dr. J. Patrick Lewis, because he is one of the few Renaissance Men I've had the privilege to know. I was fortunate enough to marry one, too! So, yes, my husband is one of my heroes! |

Cathy's Blurbs |
About me:
I am older than I am willing to believe, more inconsequential than I like to admit, and have only enough knowledge to be dangerous. I have a B.A. from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. I majored in Visual Arts and Sociology. For reasons unknown even to myself, I chose to take follow-up undergrad coursework at Ohio State U. in Philosophy (general, Ethics, religion 1 & 2, history of Western, and environmental), and I am an autodidact in contemporary American poetry. Taken as a whole, this makes me the most uselessly overeducated bore I know. Sometimes I fall asleep in mid-conversation with myself.
I was raised by a secular humanist mother and an agnostic father in a non-religious household. I was encouraged to explore religion for myself. My husband and I are decisively atheist.
My parents are Union-supporting Socialists. My husband is an Independent and I am socially liberal (almost libertarian -- as in legalize all victimless crimes for adults over 18), and politically for restoring a constitutional democracy based on actual debate, reason, and middle ground. (Remember when John McCain made sense? Remember that Nixon was for equal rights and finding a cure for cancer? Remember that Carter went on to found Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Foundation? Remember when science was actually leading to advances in our quality of life?) It is a strange world indeed when Pat Buchanan suddenly sounds like a moderate voice of reason.
I worked as a unit coordinator for an inpatient psychiatric unit at a state mental hospital until shortly after 9/11. Soonafter, I could no longer tell on which side of the desk I belonged. Now, because I also have Multiple Sclerosis (which I am fortunate enough to control with medication), I am on permanent disability.

Who I'd like to meet:
A NOTE TO OTHERS WITH MS: I am very passionate about NARCOMS. If this acronym means nothing to you, please google it, follow the link, and do what the website asks you to do. We're talking about a cure, here, people. All they want from you is information about your experience with MS. It's a gathering of information from as many MS patients as they can get their little hands on, to try to peice together the common threads of this baffling disease. Do it. THEN send me a "Friend" request if you want, because of course I'm happy to meet others who are dedicated to helping find a cure.
Now who I really don't want to meet: rabid religious people and anyone who doesn't spell out words. Do u no what I mean? If u don't, u r the person I don't want 2 meet.
Also, if you know any of these people, hook me up: Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Janeane Garafalo, Al Franken, Tina Fey, Kathy Griffin, Tavis Smiley, John McCain, Billy Collins, Stephen Dunn, Stephanie Miller, Lewis Black.
