It has been quite a journey for the Dundalk singer, who first came to prominence as a child protégé. ‘I suppose it was a natural progression for me to become a professional singer’ says Maguire. ‘My mother tells a story of how as toddler I discovered the echo sound effect I could get by putting my head inside the washing machine in the kitchen when it was empty. I’d put my head in for hours and sing my heart out, much to the amusement of visitors to the house!’. .. ..Thankfully she eventually found another outlet for her musical desire through local talent competitions, eventually recording her first studio album at the age of twelve. She went about selling these albums herself and recalls getting a phone call from Gerry Ryan’s producer, who had received hundreds of requests from housewives talking about a little girl who was ‘going around selling her tapes and singing for people’... ..A live appearance on Ryan’s radio show a week later gave birth to a new child star. Cathy instantly became known throughout Ireland and an extensive TV, radio and touring was to follow. .. ..Coming of age and wanting to shed the child star image, she returned to college and gained a Hons Degree in Music. The bright lights of Nashville, TN beckoned and she decided while visiting friends one summer in New York, that she would take the bus trip down to Nashville and chance her arm. Eighteen hours later she got off a Greyhound bus and checked into the Fiddlers Inn Motel. .. ..Ironically the first person she met was a preacher who took her down to meet a friend of his who was in the music business. This friend turned out to be legendary producer Cowboy Jack Clement producer of Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, Jerry Lee Lewis and U2, amongst many others. Maguire was become his musical muse and began an apprenticeship in music that was to have her sing and write with some of the most renowned names in the music business. ‘Hanging out in Jack’s studio was priceless in my development as a singer. I got to do amazing stuff, such as sit in the studio with Johnny Cash the day he was recording his last song of what was to be his last album’. .. ..Being around such creative people also inspired her to start exploring song writing and collaborating. She has since written with some of the most prolific songwriters in Nashville including five times Ivor Norvello winner Roger Cook, of world renowned writing duo Cook and Greenway. .. ..A chance meeting with Dave Kavanagh, during a trip home was to send her on a different path resulting in the new album which comes out in April. The album was recorded in Dublin and includes a rare mix of accomplished self-penned songs and classics from artists that have truly inspired Cathy... ..‘Although thankfully I have gone full circle and returned home to record this album, it was necessary to spread my wings and graft for a few years.
