Cathy Ray were formed in 1986, and were then called Peyote Fly the Chillum Egg. The band progressed from playing a variety of Hawkwind songs and other covers, through increasingly confident self-penned material and a number of name changes (Light and Sound Department, The Mystery Guests, Toxic Avengers, Gulch, Caustic and finally Cathy Ray).
The band split in 2002 due to geographical differences.
