Joan's Interests
|
| General | Movies (especially silents and precodes), reading, gardening, urban exploring, walking, cats big and little, animals of all kinds. | | Music | Opera, Twenties Jazz and Jazz from right now, Bing Crosby, Connee Boswell, Ella Fitzgerald, Wynton Marsalis, Bach, Mozart, Britten, Wagner. Unreasoning dislike of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, and it's not negotiable so don't argue with me. | | Movies | Far too many to mention here. But the favorites I watch over and over again are:
Now Voyager (and just about anything with Bette Davis),
Laura, Leave Her to Heaven, and Ghost & Mrs. Muir (Gene Tierney),
The Uninvited, Val Lewton's films, Burn Witch Burn, Curse of the Demon,
Real Genius, Clueless, Ever After, 10 Things I Hate About You
Marion Davies
| | Television | Currently hooked on Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Lost, Supernatural, Heroes. Already missing Rome, Carnivale, and Veronica Mars. Still in mourning for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Turner Classic Movies! | | Books | The most important book ever written about the Arbuckle trials that doesn't mention Arbuckle once: Stanley Cohen's "Folk Devils and Moral Panics," 3rd Edition, (Routledge) 2001. Other useful works have been Dean Alan Budnick's "Directed Verdict" (Harvard), 2000), which studies the press coverage of the Arbuckle case; Gary Alan Fine's "Difficult Reputations: Collective Memories of the Evil, Inept, and Controversial," University of Chicago Press (Chicago, IL), 2001. Excellent books covering the development and finances of the American movie industry(books that focus on finances rather than on repeating colorful anecdotes about movie moguls) are Robert Stanley's The Celluloid Empire, Douglas Gomery's The Hollywood Studio System, Thomas Schatz's The Genius of the System, and Tino Balio's The American Film Industry. | | Heroes | Tippi Hedren and Shambala,
http://www.shambala.org/
Fr. David Lowell and Raphael House in San Francisco,

Currently working on a new book on the Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle trials of 1921/1922, so I don't get out much any more. Founder and President, Daughters of Naldi.

Who I'd like to meet:
Lots of people! But mainly my grandmother and my father, who have been gone too long from my life.
