Cat OK is a Santa Barbara based band led by songwriter Rob Taylor, with influences ranging from Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr. and The Replacements, to Elvis Costello, The Jayhawks, Neil Young and John Coltrane. Cat OK's eponymous debut, released in 2005, was the result of several years of changing line-ups and false starts, playing the odd show, then promptly disbanding to flee to the comfort of Craig Costigan's garage studio. On the verge of giving up hope for a dedicated line-up, Taylor had a chance encounter with bassist Brad Altavilla at a neighborhood watering hole in the Spring of 2007. After realizing that the two had met and actually played together once as teens, the idea of a no-strings-attached jam session with Brad's cohort, Chris Agh on drums was suggested. A fruitless, meandering set including Ramones and Rolling Stones covers ensued before a thinly veiled secret was discovered: Taylor was sitting on a mountain of songs. A quick, effortless work-up of two or three tunes led Taylor to the bitter-sweet conclusion that his days with Cat OK were not yet over.
The trio took any and every gig that came their way for several months, developing material for the second Cat OK release in 2008, CROPDUSTING. Gaining a reputation for high volume performances, Taylor felt the need to change the focus of the band to include more folk, pop and vocal oriented music. Meanwhile, multi-instrumentalist Aaron Campos was entertaining ideas of infiltration into Cat OK, offering his services as second guitarist, thus providing the glue needed to bind the group and complete the line-up. In January 2009 the band again found itself in the studio to record the third Cat OK release, DRESS FOR THE WEATHER YOU WANT. A slight departure from the heavily guitar-laden work of previous releases, "Dress" features a more lush palate of sounds and a supporting cast of friends providing additional instrumentation and backing vocals. The band is currently performing songs from all three albums to a growing audience of enthusiastic lovers of song craft.
