I grew up with soul music and loved any band on Soul Train:Donna Summer,The Supremes,TheTemptations,TheStylistics,Al Green,Blue Magic,Chaka Khan. I also love the music my mother used to hear, Ecuadorian folk: Julio Jaramillo, Los Hermanos Nino Naranja. Other Spanish music: Los Panchos with Eydie Gorme,Javier Solis. My father listened to classical music and other greats like Frank Sinatra, Doris Day,Sammy Davis Jr.,Nat King Cole.As a teenager I got into Rock and listened to Led Zep,The Who, The Beatles, The Stones, the Doors,Neil Young,Paul Simon. Reggae like Bob Marley.After my Rock stage, I was into Punk and Pop: Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols,The Replacements,English Beat,Duran, Duran, Suzanne Vega,The Cure,Human League,Modern English,General Public, The Jam,Elvis Costello. Cannot forget Johnny Cash or Tom Waits.Now I am into Jazz and Blues: E.S.T, Stan Getz,Keith Jarret,Monk, Coltrane,Lizz Wright, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald,Dionne Farris. I also like others like Kaki King, Susheela Raman, Buena Vista Social Club.
I’ve been writing songs ever since I was twelve, when I got my first guitar. It was a gift from my mom, as an ersatz for a piano, which we couldn’t afford, and had no room for in a cramped New York City apartment that housed seven of us, very loud Latinos. Besides being a lot of fun, song writing is also very satisfying, especially if total strangers actually like your songs. Very special thanks to Dave Stephens for his patience and his inspiring musical contribution. Also a big thanks to Sue for the beautiful tree pictures.
