Terry's Interests
|
| General | COMIC BOOKS: My first comic book was issue 40 of the Amazing Spider-man in the 60s ("Spidey Saves the Day!"), which jumpstarted a love affair with Marvel comics, particularly Spider-man (Stan Lee, writer/Johnny Romita, penciller) and Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's imaginative and incredible run on the Fantastic Four (favorite Kirby inker, Joe Sinnott). Also Daredevil (pencilled by Gene Colan). In the 70s, the Tomb of Dracula (Marv Wolfman, writer/Gene Colan, pencils/Tom Palmer, inks) and Conan the Barbarian (Roy Thomas, writer/Barry Smith, pencils)
Also in the 60s-70s, there were the black and white Warren comic magazines - Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella. Discovered the art of Bernie Wrightson (particularly the story "Jenifer"), writer/artist Richard Corben, writer Doug Moench, cover art paintings by Frank Frazetta and Sanjulian, art by Wally Wood, and many, many more.
In the 80s, there was Love and Rockets (a gloriously black and white comic by Los Bros. Hernandez, Jaime, Gilbert and sometimes Mario-- the first two issues are among my favorite comics), Swamp Thing by Alan Moore (w), Steve Bissette (p) and John Totleben (i), writer/artist Chester Brown's amazing Yummy Fur, Dave Stevens' Rocketeer, Mike Baron and Steve Rude's Nexus. I also discovered Will Eisner and his terrific The Spirit strips from the 40's, reprinted by Warren. First read an early collection of Dave Sim's Cerebus the Aardvark when it was primarily a Barry Smith/Conan parody-- rediscovered it again now that Sim (and background artist Gerhard) have finished their 300 issue run of stories.
More recently:the art of Frank Cho through his Liberty Meadows strip collections (also Shanna the She Devil);
from Heavy Metal magazine: the erotic art of Serpieri's Druuna stories, Milo Manara's erotic comic books as well, Moebius's astounding artistry;
Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Frank Miller's Sin City, Paul Chadwick's Concrete, Michael Allred's Madman and the Atomics;
and comic strips: Charles Schultz' Peanuts, Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes, Darby Conley's Get Fuzzy, Walt Kelly's Pogo Possum, the delirious Krazy Kat, Lynda Barry's work, and the out of print Mimi Pond's Secrets of the Powder Room.
ART: Currently fascinated with so-called Low Brow art or Pop Surrealism. Like the work of Mark Ryden, Todd Schorr, Robt. Williams, Eric White, Glenn Barr, Ron English, Isabel Samaras. Discovering several more artists with each new issue of Juxtapoz magazine.
Nursing an idea to merge my Low Brow art fascination with my interest in creating and self-publishing comics. | | Music | My tastes in music are kind of all over the place. I'm really bad with lyrics, attracted first to the music, but one of my favorite artists is Bruce Springsteen, and I "know" the lyrics (okay, familiar is more accurate) to several of his songs, including Up All Night from Nebraska. Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, Hanson (specifically their first album)(hey, they're talented young men!), U2, Live, the Go-Gos, Elvis Costello, Warren Zevon, Indigo Girls, Neil Young, the soundtrack to Woodstock (the original 3 record set, including the stage announcements-- come on! I can't believe they don't have Max Yasgur speaking to the crowd on the CD!), Chicago Transit Authtority (i.e. Chicago's first album), Hawksley Workman (LOVE his Lover/Fighter CD), Patty Smith, Credence Clearwater Revival, John Hiatt (particularly his "family trilogy" of albums), Rob Zombie, Dusty Springfield, Mariah Carey (I like the way she sings!), the Beatles. | | Movies | My two favorite movies: It's a Wonderful Life (directed by Frank Capra) with James Stewart and Pulp Fiction (directed by Quentin Tarantino). (I tend to link films by either directors, the actors or sometimes the writers). FAVORITE DIRECTORS: Akira Kurosawa, Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, the Coen Brothers, Brian Depalma, Francis Ford Coppola, Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino.
Other favorites: DRAMA- The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola), A Man for All Seasons (directed by Fred Zinneman, written by Robert Bolt), Fargo (Joel and Ethan Coen writers, J. Coen director, E. Coen producer), Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg). HORROR- The Exorcist (William Friedkin)(personally, the scariest film), Alien (Ridley Scott), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper), Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 (Sam Raimi), Jaws (Steven Spielberg)(although this movie is so wonderfully made, told and acted, it transcends the horror genre), The Haunting (Robert Wise)(the original, by far), An American Werewolf in London (John Landis), Carrie (Brian DePalma). COMEDY - Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Stanley Kubrick), Raising Arizona (the Coen Bros.), The Lady Eve (Preston Sturges), What's Up, Doc? (Peter Bogdanovich), The Producers and Young Frankenstein(Mel Brooks), Annie Hall and Love and Death (Woody Allen). ROMANCE- When Harry Met Sally... (Rob Reiner), Notting Hill (with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant), The Wedding Singer (with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore), Jane Eyre (with Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine), Notorious (Alfred Hitchcock) FOREIGN - The Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa), Amelie. EXPLOITATION: Nude for Satan (Luigi Bastella w/Rita Calderoni), Zombie (Lucio Fulci), Delirium, The Reincarnation of Isabel (both with Rita Calderoni), the films of Jean Rollin, the films of Santo the Silver Masked Wrestler (okay, the elements of these films are fascinating the actual filmmaking is pretty awful)(actually, that could apply to many of these exploitation films as well), Re-Animator (great movie!). I also am interested in making films, especially now that digital video and computers have transformed home movie making. Thus, documentaries about the making of films are also of high interest to me: Hearts of Darkness: the Making of Apocalypse Now, American Movie, Divine Trash: An in-depth look at the early films of John Waters. | | Television | I don't watch as much television as I like, but there have been series I've really enjoyed.
From the 60s, The Avengers with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg... particularly Diana Rigg.
When Barney Miller was in syndication, I really enjoyed that.
Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. Missed the last season, but I heard it sucked, so no loss.
Haven't watched Alias in over 1 and half seasons, but I really liked that show and Jennifer Garner. | | Books | Even though I've read Tolstoy's Crime and Punishment and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, I tend towards anything movie or comic book related.
Scriptwriting, interviews, etc.

About me:
|
Who I'd like to meet:
Including those who have passed away as well...
in a nutshell, I'd probably be happy meeting any filmmaker, no matter what their budget, their genre-preference, their degree of fame, if any. Having said that, wouldn't mind having a conversation with David Lynch, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lina Wertmuller, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Leni Reifenstahl, Wes Anderson, Joel and Ethan Coen, Jane Campion, Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, Julie Taymor, Costa-Gavras, Steven Spielberg, Paul Schrader, Woody Allen, Howard Hawks, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Russ Meyer, Bernardo Bertolucci, Gene Hackman, Milos Forman, John Sayles, John Waters, Walter Murch, Robert Altman, John Huston, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, David Cronenberg, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Greg Araki, David Mamet... Arrgh! There's too many to list, to choose from...!
Although, the irony is, there's a number of creative people I know already, and several who (whom?) I can call friends, and I hardly talk to THEM... so maybe I should work on THAT: Randy Kramer, Steve D'Addieco, Lisa Ludwig, Brian Cavanagh, Norm Sham...
And many, many, many more..!
