  • Bio

St. Paul native John Knowles has been playing music around the Twin Cities since 1991. Drawing most of his song-writing inspiration from sitting in front of the entrance to Carver's Cave at the bottom of Dayton's bluff in St. Paul, he formed a band centering around his electrified, amplified banjo and called it Cave Music. Like many other local bands, John and his constantly evolving group of like-minded souls made their debut at the Seventh Street Entry in 1993. .. The band gained instant popularity and John began working on a CD. People started to referring to him as "The Cave Man" and the appropo moniker stuck. Two years later, "Banjo from Hell" was recorded and released. The CD received rave reviews and the band soon gained a sizable local following. .. In 1997, Cave Music released a EP Christmas Album "Holiday Cheer" and in 1998, "The Abducted." It was also that year that Cave Man received the "Best Male Vocalist Award" by the City Pages. .. Cave Music continued to play around town in the following years and in 2002 released another CD entitled "Mandatory Helmets". .. In 2003 Cave Man began exploring new directions and formed an old-time country and western cover band called "The Smiling Cowboys" who still play around town today. The outfit is known for their explosive, devil-may-care live performances and a CD may be on the horizon soon. .. Keep an eye (and an ear) on this page for further exciting updates...Meanwhile...enjoy the songs on this page which were actually written at Carvers Cave. The concept of 'Monica & the Molecules was born at the 'cave'. Their video follows the Chuck Statler video, 'Prozac'. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
