"It happens on any random day, coming home from work, or late on a weekday night, right before you get into bed after being up for 30 hours straight. You're driving, you're sleeping, you're sitting in the station with some of the best men you know from the department. You're drinking stale coffee trying to stay awake. You're explaining the steam burns on the back of your neck to a confused stranger or a best friend. You're coming back to the other life, the one without firefighting, where no one understands why you do it. You're tired, you're working off little sleep, and the question creeps up and you try to ignore it "Why do I do this? Why the danger, why the losses, the missed work, the missed school, hours of training and the complaining girlfriend?" Because the lure of living a firefighter life is just too potent, and the experience of the road, the times are memories forever, dropping whatever you are doing, to go to the aid of a stranger. At calls, it feels like, for once, you actually get to live as if it could be your last moments. It's worth the sacrifices, its worth all the bullshit, because if you wait long enough, a time will roll around, and you'll be in the truck, excited, nervous, hanging your tag, one among 4, first engine in, trying to save a structure, about to go into the fire with your partner, and suddenly all those cliches that you ever heard make sense, and you, are defined. You say it to yourself, and it means everything "I am a firefighter, and this moment, right here, is my life."
