Music has always been around me, my parents listened to a lot of different styles of music, and growing up in Bermuda helped with those wonderful calypso songs. My mother looked like Marilyn; my father was a fast rising gr
ound engineer, for B.O.A.C, the British Airways at the time. Growing up I listened to my parents’ records, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tom Jones, Andy Williams etc. We changed countries every couple of years then, going from Jamaica to Singapore, to Bahrain and my schooling was getting a bit mixed up, so I was packed off to boarding school at 9, and then got into listening to radio Caroline and radio Luxembourg, I could sing a song I’d only heard a couple of times, by heart if I liked it. It never occurred to me at this time that maybe you could earn your living doing this. With the other girls I discovered Led Zep, Alice Cooper, T-Rex, Deep Purple, Free and all the others. It’s when I saw Top of The Pops one day, I thought, ‘I wanna do that!’ I sung my comrades to sleep at night, a slow Elvis song, ‘In the ghetto ‘ It was on the radio at the time….
At nearly 15 my family moved to Trinidad, where I tried to go back to school, but where I sat at the back of the class, then one day decided that I wasn’t learning anything so I just stopped going. My education from then on was from the beach, the jungle, the parties (when my parents were out) and generally the good life. After my Dad’s job finished there, we went back to England where family life and I just didn’t fit anymore…. I was fascinated by London and wanted more than anything to be there and get into the ‘music circles’.
So at 17, my family moved to Bangkok and I left it all behind and went to London, where I got a job in Oxford street at Harlequin Records, and slowly but surely I made my way into the studios, and even had an open invitation to any group that played at the Hammersmith Odeon, I just turned up at the backstage door, and my roadie buddies would let me in. I wasn’t a screaming ‘ fan ‘ and I would stay out of the way and just watch from the side, I could also go down to the front and watch the big shows. Frank Zappa, Blondie, The Tubes etc….
Then I got a job working backstage at The Rainbow Theatre, a beautiful old theatre that was one of the best places to see a band…there I saw, Bob Marley, Ted Nugent, Lynerd Skynerd, Graham Parker, Southside Johnny & The Ashbury Dukes and lots of other big bands touring at the time….
But London was a big lonely place and I ended up leaving to get away from all the other side of the city…. especially the drugs.
Well, that’s all in a nutshell of course, so much was happening at the time, but the thing is, music was behind everything I did.
I didn’t mean to come to France, it was all a question of a bike accident, in Spain that made me come back to France, where I started singing in a bar in Saint Palais, with an American band, Miss Thing. The bass player ended up playing with Johnny Halliday on his ‘Survivant’ tour.
I met my future ex husband there.
That was the end of a volume, the page had turned, from then on, nothing would ever be the same.....
Ten years afterwards, I had the occasion to get my life back together….
I formed ‘Izadora Gonzo ‘ with Jean-Baptiste Goudrey (guitar), Yves Martinez (bass), Eric Bourdet (drums)
We did some great gigs locally, support to people like Bernard Allison, Chris Jagger, Joanna Connors, and some big biker events at the time. This lasted nearly two years, and my marriage was soon to come between me and the music…again.
In May 1999, I left behind me my house, cars, my company that I had started, (selling artificial flowers wholesale) and a very violent husband, to try and get my life back together.
By summer I had replaced a friend in a big rhythm & blues band; from there I started up the trio, Acoustic Soul Factory, as the big band was great, but not very easy to sell. Then in 2000, the need for electric guitars made my path cross another young guitarist, Julien Campus. An architect student who had got down his Jimi or Stevie-Ray riffs to a T! PIMENTO was born. We started off doing bars and anything we could, then during ‘la fete de la musique’ where anybody can play in the street. A journalist from Paris-Normandie (the local paper) gave us half a page with a big photo leaving the other, better known bands, only some small lines at the bottom of the page…..
After ‘coming out’ and playing better places, working on our own songs as well as some covers from bands like ‘The Hoax’
We were asked to do support to Ray Charles at the Zenith, in November 2002, then we did a residence at The Chesterfield Café in Paris, this was a bit much for the guitarist who left just afterwards.
I found a replacement guitarist in the summer of 2002; Laurent Magniez worked very hard to fit into his role, and Pimento went on to record a 4 title cd and do support to some great bands amongst which, Chuck Berry in the foresaid Zenith.
So now, ten years after my ‘come-back’ PIMENTO is over. I discovered in 2007 that I had had a cancer growing inside me for about five years; of course this cut things short.
Now nearly two years afterwards, Acoustic Soul Factory is still going, we won a prize at The Blues sur Seine 2008 to play at the Europa Jazz Festival in Le Mans.
Now after fighting this cancer, I have come back, thanks to my friends in the business, being invited on stage and in studios to participate in their projects. I am also open to other propositions…
On my page I have put some stuff that I have recorded, various different projects with different people, I haven’t been able to get recordings of everything so this is just some examples……

La musique m’a toujours entouré, mes parents écoutaient beaucoup de styles différents, grandir aux Bermudes avec la Calypso, et les chanteurs comme The Ink Spots m’a aidé. Ma mère ressemblait à Marilyn et mon père était un jeun dynamique ingénieur pour B.O.A.C, la British Airways de l’époque. J’écoutais leurs disques, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tom Jones etc.…. Et les stations de radio American. Nous changeons de pays tous le temps, La Jamaïque, Singapour, Bahreïn, mon éducation a souffert, j’apprenais le chinois et l’arabe et même l’Irlandais dans une petite école du village où tout le monde était dans la même classe ! Donc à neuf ans j’étais envoyée en pension en Angleterre, une école pour jeune filles…..
Là, j’ai découverte Radio Caroline et Radio Luxembourg, (j’avais une peluche avec une radio caché à l’intérieur que ma mère m’a offerte.) Et après bien sur, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, T-Rex, Free…… enfin tout quoi ! Nous avons le droit de regarder ‘Top of the Pops’ et vers mes treize quatorze ans je regardais bouche bée, Rod Stewart, et Slade sur scène la bas……
Je chantais la nuit pour mes camarades, pour les endormir.. » In the Ghetto » par Elvis, Ca passait à la radio tout le temps.
Vers mes 15 ans, je suis repartie avec mes parents à Trinidad, (Trinité & Tobago), là l’école parlait de choses je n’avais jamais entendue parler, Donc, j’ai arrêté d’y aller.
Mon éducation a partir de là, c’était, la plage, la jungle, et la musique, Trinidad est un pays très musicale !
Au retour en Angleterre je suis parti de chez mes parents. Je voulais aller à Londres, donc j’ai fais quelques petits boulots et je suis arrivée à 17 ans. J’allais étudier……
Je travaillais dans un grand magasin de disques sur Oxford Street, Harlequin Records. Tout doucement je me suis fait mon chemin vers les studios et les salles… Je connaissais tout les roadies qui travaillaient au Hammersmith Odeon, j’étais la p’tite sœur, je me faisais toute petite et je regardais les grandes se préparer… je descendais dans la salle pour les big shows !
Après j’ai pris un boulot back stage au Rainbow Theatre, là j’ai vu Bowie, Bob Marley, Ted Nugent, Lynerd Skynerd, Graham Parker, Southside Johnny & The Ashbury Dukes etc...
Mais Londres peut aussi être austère et violent, beaucoup d’egos se clash, je suis partis fuir un peu tout ça, et les drogues aussi……
Voilà, un peu prés les grandes lignes, beaucoup de choses se passaient à l’époque, je suis parti me reposer chez mes parents dans le Devon.
Le jour ou toute la famille est partie immigrés en Australie, je ne voulais plus rester en Angleterre.
Je ne voulais pas forcement venir en France, c’est la suite d’un accident de moto en Espagne, mais passe …je me suis trouvée un boulot à chanter dans un bar d’été avec un groupe d’Américains, ‘Miss Thing’ le bassiste Jimmy Gibson, joueras plus tard, sur le ‘Survivant’ tour de Johnny Halliday.
J’ai rencontrais mon future ex mari…..
Après ce qui suit est d’un autre monde, une page de tourné, j’ai eu ma fille, une autre vie….
Dix ans après, j’ai réussi à me retrouver et j’ai formé ‘IZADORA GONZO’ avec Jean-Baptiste Gaudry,( génie de la guitare de 19ans), Yves Martinez (Bass) Eric Bourdet (Drums) on faisait les premières parties comme Bernard Allison, Chris Jagger, Joanna Connors, et les événements de biker. Pendant environ deux ans ca tourné, et puis mon mariage est intervenu, encore.
En Mai 1999, j’ai laissé derrière moi ma maison, voitures, société, et tous mes affaires pour quitter un mariage de 18 ans de violences..
L’été 1999 pour l’Armada j’ai remplacé une chanteuse dans un big band de rythme & blues, c’était un succès, mais très dure à faire tourné, donc j’ai proposé au guitariste Alain Bertin et Saxophoniste Eric Preterre de me joindre pour former un groupe acoustique. ACOUTIC SOUL FACTORY est né. En 2000, mon besoin de l’électrique m’a poussé à rencontré Julien Campus, (génie de la guitare de 19 ans) !? PIMENTO est né. L’été suivait et à ‘La fête de la musique’ à Rouen nous jouions sur un trottoir dans une petite rue. Un journaliste de ‘ Paris-Normandie ‘ nous fait un article qui prenait toute la page et mentionné les autres en bas. En 2001 nous faisons la première partie de RAY CHARLES, et début 2002, une semaine de résidence au CHESTERFILED CAFE à Paris. Le répertoire était un mélange de compos, et reprises de Willy Deville et The Hoax, etc....

J’ai retrouvé une guitariste en été 2002, Laurent Magniez il n’avait jamais fait ce genre de blues avant, bientôt nous écrivons et le cd FIGHTING MONSTERS est sorti. PIMENTO continué son chemin et s’est fait encore une première partie de choix avec CHUCK BERRY au Zénith de Rouen.
En 2007, Pimento s’est arrêté quand j’ai découvert qu’un cancer me rongé depuis 5 ans.
Aujourd’hui, deux ans après, Acoustic Soul Factory tourne toujours, nous avons gagné un prix à BLUES SUR SEINE 2008 et nous avons joué au Mans à EUROPA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2009. Je suis revenue, grâce à mes amies/collègues qui me font tourner, j’ai les propositions d’écriture et enregistrements, mais je cherche encore à monter un truc……
