About me:

Better Transgender Care Now - Get Involved in the Community Clinics Campaign

In the summer of 2006, FTM Alliance of Los Angeles and the Transgender Law Center expanded our health care access programs to include working on transforming health care services offered at LA-based community clinics. In doing this work, we are emphasizing community organizing strategies. The work is funded primarily by the California Endowment, California Wellness Foundation, and Liberty Hill Foundation. The Community Clinics Campaign (C3) is about changing the health care infrastructure to improve the health and well-being of transgender people and their families throughout L.A County. We will identify up to 5 clinics from around the county with whom we can work to increase their ability to provide health care to the transgender community. This infrastructure will: (1) reduce the ill-effects that occur when some people are not able to transition (depression, anxiety, etc) (2) provide culturally appropriate access to on-going basic health care (3) allow service providers the opportunity to work one-on-one with patients to reduce their risk for health-related societal problems (HIV transmission, substance abuse, etc.) This would mean that the services would be available to people without insurance, people on Medi-Cal, and probably on a sliding scale basis to people whose insurance excludes transition related care.

To learn more about the Community Clinics Campaign and to get involved please visit: http://transhealthcare.googlepages.com/home

FTM Book Vol. 1 = OUT NOW!!!!!

About FTM Book Vol. 1
FTM Book Vol 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life is an easy-to-understand, yet comprehensive primer on FTM issues such as:

What is an FTM?
How do FTMs see themselves?
Appearance
Stages in Transition
Surgeries Available
Common Personal Histories
Violence
Discrimination
Health Issues
Counseling
Relationships
Common Legal Issues

We've worked hard to help create definitions that will help you talk about trans issues with others, including terms for body parts unique to the FTM and by naming the stages of transitioning. This book is great for anyone who who is having trouble understanding the lifestyle or choices of a transperson. When we first began dating, we were shocked that there was no one place that he (Aaron) could turn to show me (Crystal) "See, this explains what being an FTM means." We hope that this book will be a good start.

Best of all, when you order FTM Book Vol. 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life you can feel good knowing that sales of the book are being used to fund more research to help FTMs and their partners get through the challenges of their lives. This is a great book for youself and for anyone you know who could use a little more understanding. Also, you can help teach others about trans issues by donating copies to your local high schools, colleges, LGBT centers and libraries.

Get your copy here: http://www.cafepress.com/muskegon115

FTM Book Vol. 2 is also in the works (more focus on relationship issues etc), as well as a few other things to be announced...

FYI:

Dear Community Member:

We are excited to announce the launch of the next cycle of the LDIRs in
Health program here in Los Angeles! This program seeks to develop skills,
awareness, and actions for uniting social/economic justice work with
community health work.

As you may know, the Leadership Development in Interethnic Relations program strives to support and challenge individuals to broaden their notion of community while working in multicultural collaborations. We are very excited to be bringing this work to the health sector to strengthen the connections between social justice and community health leadership. We had a
challenging and very exciting first cycle for this new health-focused LDIR
program in Los Angeles in 2005-2006. In 2007, we continued to learn and
grow as a program while sharing our resources, ideas, and practices with a
set of participants in California's Central Valley. We are very excited to be returning to LA for the upcoming 2008-2009 program year.

Our next LDIRs in Health cycle will begin on October 11, 2008. To get more
information, please contact the LDIR Application Info Line at 213.241.0263.

We are looking for a diverse group of 30 adults (ages 18 and over) who are
affected by or working on a diverse set of community health issues in the
Los Angeles area.

For more info see: http://www. ldir. org/
