A recent, creative addition to the burgeoning jazz scene in this part of Brooklyn is a composer collective featured monthly at the Cornerstone Bar on Cortelyou. The workshop environment premieres new music every time, written by each member of the 10-piece jazz orchestra.
The rich instrumentation comprised of three reed players, two trombones, two vocalists, piano, bass and drums, lends itself to some fresh new sounds and textures exploited by each member (writer) in the band. The diversity of the group whos members come from as far away as Korea, Canada, Denmark, and Hawaii is reflected in the diverging influences heard in the music itself. Last months listener heard sounds of rock, blues, avant garde, Debussy, and Brazilian music within a jazz context. This month who knows?
