About me:
The Capital City Jaycees were born from the Jefferson City Jaycee Women’s organization. Following the decision of a Supreme Court ruling in Minnesota, the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce, on August 16, 1984, in a vote of 5,372 to 386 (with 77 abstentions), voted to admit women to full voting membership in the organization. Prompted by this action, at their National Convention held in June 1985 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the National Jaycee Women’s organization voted to officially disband.
On July 9, 1985 at the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Jefferson City Jaycee Women, the local organization officially voted to disband. At that time the members had a big decision to make: 1) dissolve as an organization and do nothing; 2) join the already existing Jefferson City Jaycees; or 3) start a new Jaycee chapter. Due to the fact that the Jaycee Women’s chapter had so many of their its projects established, the members voted to do the later and on that night, the Capital City Jaycees were chartered. It was a hot summer night at the Cole County fairgrounds and 32 women were there to become the charter members of the Capital City Jaycees. Elections were held, and Linda Bray became the charter President of the Capital City Jaycees. The chapter was encouraged to only submit the required 20 members to form a new chapter and to hold the other 12 members to add later for growth. Linda Bray stated that she had 32 women there who were willing to form the chapter that night and how could she or anyone else decide who would be charter members and who would be added later. Thus, setting the tone and basis for the philosophies of the chapter, she turned all 32 women in as charter members. Coincidently, the beginning of the Jaycee movement was chartered in 1915 in St. Louis, Missouri with 32 members.
In their first ten months of existence (July 9, 1985 – April 30, 1986), the Capital City Jaycees grow in membership from the 32 charter members to ending the Jaycee year with 128 members. The U.S. Jaycees considered this 4 times growth in membership to be a “Grand Slam”. Along with membership growth, the Capital City Jaycees also had well rounded programming and projects. Taking into consideration the programming and membership growth, in June 1985 at their National Convention in Milwaukee Wisconsin, the U.S. Jaycees awarded the Capital City Jaycees the “National Milestone Award”, naming the chapter as one of the Top 3 New Chapters in the entire Nation.
