Music
I heart my iPod way too much. Top 40 Radio really ain't my thang, but thanks to the early influence of people like Dr. Demento & Frederick Richard Kerns & Tony Scalzo,
I insist that I am absolutely, in no way, biased when I include ANYTHING by TonyScalzo and/or Fastball.
I enjoy a wide and ever-expanding range of music. (actually, I just re-read my profile and lately I'd say it's tapered down a bit to mostly Judy Garland and the Partridge Family.)
1970s Bubblegum Pop (Osmond, Cassidy),
Judy Garland
1920's Big Band jazz, WWII era pop, Showtunes (obviously) and Sister acts: heavy on the harmonies: Andrews, Roches, McGuire, King, Boswell.
Hey, if you've never heard the Shaggs, you haven't experienced music.
Movies
"Valkyrie" on New Years day. Re-watched "Death Becomes Her." I am a little nostalgic about those great broad (as in "you old broad") comedies from decades past like "9to5," "Witches of Eastwick," "Outrageous Fortune," "Big Business.." Great stuff.
The last movies I saw in a theatre were "Bolt," "Twilight", "Mamma Mia," "Indiana Jones and the blah blah blah..," "Enchanted," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and "Evan Almighty." Before that it was "Pirates...Dead Man's Chest." Yes, I know, a whole year between theatre visits. But we've got Verizon FIOS at home, so 99.99% of all my movie watching happens there. It used to be that if I was channel surfing and came across any of the following movies I was compelled to watch it to the end: Back to the Future, Victor Victoria, Star (Julie Andrews), Grease, Hairspray (the 1987 original version, thank you),A Fish Called Wanda, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Muriel's Wedding, Kinky Boots......but my latest movie trap has been CONNIE & CARLA. I can't resist its hold on me! "The sound of your voice is giving me MONO!!!" (or hives, or shingles) I think I've always wanted to be a drag queen. "The World's Fastest Indian," with Anthony Hopkins, and loved it. Yes, there was a tranny in the movie, but that's not the only reason I liked it.
I used to think that "THE EDGE" was the scariest movie ever made. Now that I've seen "IDIOCRACY" I've changed my mind.

ABOUT ME: I love SHOW BIZNESS!
I grew up in my own room with a full length closet-door mirror that I'd stand if front of and lip-sync to songs I'd tape-recorded off the tv from Judy Garland movies, I Love Lucy episodes, Bette Midler and Donny & Marie records... I even once forced my little brother to learn all the words and moves to the medley from "Easter Parade" and we'd perform it for relatives. (He was actually very good!)
I started taking violin lessons at age 7, but since there wasn't a string program in our district I played drums in band from 5th grade thru graduation. During a half-time show our senior year we even worked in a violin solo wherein I would put down my tri-toms, pick up the violin, play the introduction to a Russian rhapsody while the ladies twirled their fire-batons. When the whistle blew and the marching started I'd put the drums back on and join the rest of the band in the maneuvers on the field. I toured as a 2nd violinist with the OC Youth Symphony to Europe in 1993, which was exciting, and that experience led me to enroll at Chapman University (known then as Chapman College.)
In college I began with a music major, but the theatre dept next door could not be resisted. I never became a theatre major, but I took part in many activities just for fun and pretty much forgot why I was in school to begin with. I changed majors and emphases a few times before ending up with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, and now I am an award-winning news anchor on a major network...um, no, that's not right at all. Persuing a writing/reporting career was never my ambition. In fact, I never knew what I wanted to do when I grew up and still don't. My degree came as I was working on staff in the school library where I stayed until 1993.
Later I worked as a receptionist then as a courier for DHL (in Beverly Hills, meeting many a celebrity, the famous and infamous.)
The real fun started in 1988 when Paul Frizler, Dean of the Faculty and Head of the English dept (and father of my RA and roommate Karla) announced auditions for another of his locally renowned rock and roll productions. These were live, 4-5 hour recreations of musical acts spanning the history of popular music, theatre, movies, comedy, whatever applied to the theme of the year. I was just hanging out at auditions when Paul asked if I wanted to try my hand at the Georgia Gibbs version of "Dance with me Henry." It got laughs, I got in the show, and had the time of my life. I've done every show since.
For me it was like fantasy showbiz camp! Where else could a moderately talented singer/performer/totally non-dancer like me get up in front of a 5-25 piece band, dressed like Petula Clark, Ethel Merman or Annie Lennox and sing for 10 nights for 1500 people paying $20 a pop? I even got to play violin and drums a few times, and faked the bass well enough that someone later asked me for lessons. To feel like a star for 10 nights every two years and then slip back to a life of anonymity is to have the best of both worlds.
Those days are over, but I've posted a few videos of my performances from the Rock Show days, so please check out my videos and tell me what you think. (but be kind)
I love my partner, our dogs, Betsy & Jack, our families. I like our house... I like watching tv in it. Very attached to my iPod. I like stuff that reminds me of my childhood. Tivo is the greatest invention EVER. We like the eBay.
My latest obsession is finding ways I can reduce my impact on the environment, which has resulted in our composting and gardening at home. I also take the bus to work a few times a week and am trying to muster the courage to take my bike as well. You know, the typical little ways we've changed our habits over last year that make us feel superior to everyone around us.
STAR-GAZING!
In the last 30 years or so I have met quite a number of legends, stars, celebrities, actors, musicians, political figures, and other personalities of note. There once was a time when I had no trouble taking photos, asking for autographs, etc.
As the years progress I,,ve become a little less manic in my pursuit of celebrities and a little more conscious of the humanity in us all. Even so, whenever the opportunity presents itself I do find it a treat to see, meet or pose for a personal photo with often celebrated folk. And when I do, I usually discover that they're just ordinary people - - just like the rest of us. It's always been something I've enjoyed because, well, frankly I think it's just neat!
