“The Edmonton-born singer-songwriter has the uncanny ability to spark a connection between himself and some of the greatest musicians of all time,” boasts Exclaim! magazine about Cory Woodward. And since his arrival on the Vancouver music scene four years ago, he has done nothing but prove this statement to be true. Woodward entices listeners with a soothing, Springsteen-like rasp, then blows them away with the unbridled, soulful bellow of Joe Cocker. Like John Lennon or Jeff Tweedy before him, he can paint a bitter picture of life, but always leaves audiences with a message of hope.
A featured songwriter at the Vancouver Folk Festival in 2008, the performer took his “beautifully crafted” (Vancouver Sun) debut EP, Princess of the Skies, on tour dates across Canada, Europe and the U.S. His cover of Sam Cook’s “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” was also featured in the Val Kilmer movie The Thaw. Now, Cory Woodward is excited to unveil The Truth to music fans around the world.
After working on his first full-length record for over a year, the album is set to release in Winter 2010. “The Truth is a collection of songs I’ve written in the last two years, a detailed expression of my world during that time. They are songs written from personal experience and views of the world,” explains Woodward. On The Truth, he has brought together much of the local music community, joined by Vancouver artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Nat Jay, Adaline and Debra Jean Creelman. Working in partnership with Vancouver producer Matthew Rogers (Mark Berube, CR Avery, Twilight Hotel), the two recorded eleven songs (ten originals and one Lucinda Williams cover) of powerful melodic hooks, honest, vulnerable lyrics, and stadium-sized sound.
Woodward is looking forward to bringing The Truth to audiences across Canada in support of the Winter release, as well as hitting the summer festival circuit in 2011. “It's very exciting to release a full length album, a moment in time captured to become an artifact of love and joy that will transcend my lifetime. I feel nothing but bliss, in that respect,” expresses Woodward. “It was written and recorded to be an album in a time where singles are the growing trend, and I feel confident about a body of work that can stand on its own. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to discover it.”
