Likened to R.E.M, Doves and the Editors in the local press, Cedar have been making indie rock 'n' roll since the summer of 2002. A very British sounding band, the Watford based foursome absorb the artists they look up to and write songs that ooze positivity, energy and soul.
Obligatory quiet band member and head of caution control, Ian Bach's sultry bass noodlings add an element of ease and calm into the sometimes-frantic Cedar songs. His cool-head and ear for counter melody have ignited the band's songwriting capacity. James Harris drums like a man in a hurry. With no need for space and time he crashes through the loud and floats through the quiet effortlessly kicking each tune along and providing a real dynamic into the group. Paul Weller-esque singer/songwriter and older brother Matt Churchill, fronts the quartet harnessing the drive and energy that the music conveys. Younger brother Ross is the spark to Matt's flame; also contributing songs to the band, he takes the raw songs that Matt gives him, turning them into Pollock-like artefacts that twist and turn at every musical sinew. An artist on the fretboard as well as in the studio, Ross seeks perfection, leaving no tweak untwisted, trying to take each song to its maximum potential.
Comfortable acoustically and explosive through amps, Cedar make progress with each new song they write. With a growing confidence in their own ability to make songs that people will actually pay good money to listen to, Cedar push the boundaries of their genre, dragging elements of angular indie and plush rock 'n' roll together in a fusion of foot stamping authority.
If you're not sure who we are and have mysteriously received an add from four guys you wouldn't usually associate yourself with, it's because we've looked at your musical tastes and found them pretty funky, that or you know someone we know and we've pillaged their friends list...We don't add people for the sake of it, just so that we have thousands of 'friends' that we don't know, it's pointless as half the time, the 'friends' will never listen to the music.
We want you to enjoy the songs we've got on here and welcome comments and messages, it makes us feel popular! Keep it real.
SUBBA-CULTCHA EP OF THE MONTH"Delay drenched guitars pierce the swells of feedback hum, the driving Post-Rock epic-ness evaporates into haunting melodies building ever upwards, crescendo after crescendo, it’s almost like a score to your wettest Shoegazing fantasy… Genius! Imagine Mogwai as an indie tear jerking entity, but with the sense of mind to dig the most lush sounding melancholy out of the darkest of places." Subba-Cultcha
"Cedar's new EP “Black Sparks” shows they’ve worked on a definable sound which has been honed after hours on stage and in rehearsal rooms, even the production is very shiny and commercial sounding, for a unsigned CD."
"Cedar do have something, its well crafted guitar music with an accessible sound and its heavily influenced by the musical style of some of the 90s more successful commercial bands, which makes them sound a little bit different right now." godisinthetvzine
"Cedar seem to have a penchant for crafting out defence crashing emotionally turbulent wide screen beasts of breathlessly bruised and blistering pop"
"bracing moments of energetic effervescence a sweetly glazed sugar fizzed slice of quietly alluring majestic lovelorn pop steeped with thoughtfulness and regret
the kind of slow to burn epic detail that craftily reaches inside and strangles the life out of your vital signs only to crush whatever resolve that still remains amid a peaking finale of crescendo bearing dynamics." (Radar)
"a band who possess an ear for a cutely turned out beat pop moment or two"
"heavily primed with such class apart song craft that it makes you weep - ones to watch for"> Losingtoday.com
"Huge choruses and heavy guitars" Watford Observer
"Next on stage were the youthful and exuberant local band Cedar.
They bounced their way through a number of well written guitar based songs and moved a number of the audience to their feet to dance for the first time in the day." Watford Observer
"Up and coming Watford band, who are reminiscent of Embrace, R.E.M and Doves. Broken Town is a passionate melodic indie tune that you can quite easily imagine being played to a festival crowd." Talk Of The Town - Broken Town review
"It's really good to hear a young band trying to do something other than Libertinesque garage rock." Talk Of The Town
"Watford favourites...with powerful indie anthems" Talk Of The Town
"... a forelock touch to psychedelic Beatles... but something of great energy and powerful directness is also present in this excellent original rock ballad. Assured vocals, deft guitar work, and a production that just screams "RADIO PLAY!". Tell XFM, Radios 1, 2 and 6 you heard it first on Lemonrock, and get Cedar the recognition they deserve!" Lemonrock review, MP3 Of The Week 'Silence Can't Be Shared'
