The name Cedar immediately conjures up images of the familiar—the smell of a childhood home, a cottage in the woods, or road trips packed in the car. First off, the songs on Sturdy Soldier Do Your Worst, are indeed road trip ready. The songs act as the perfect co-pilot on a sun-drenched sojourn or starlit highway trip. Cedar pride themselves on their ability to incorporate all elements of their favorite styles and bands coherently. A task not easily accomplished when they list such diverse influences, however, on listening to Sturdy Soldier Do Your Worst, nods to The Cure, Catherine Wheel's Adam and Eve and Sonic Youth are most readily apparent.
How does a band form? If you are Pete Nickerson, Jeremy Drury and Brett Trider, you begin in high school in Lindsay, Ontario. You go off and be part of dozens of other bands in Toronto. You stop. You look around and realize you're not having fun anymore, so you seek that fun again. You find it again with your friends that have been around you the entire time. Add Craig MacLellan, a like-minded Peterborough native with congruent tastes and you continue what you started back in high school. Creating music that reminds you of why you enjoyed playing music in the first place. You call it, Cedar.
The energy and the deep connections the members of Cedar have, is heard in Cedar's melodic bass lines, driving percussion, soaring guitars and gritty harmonies that feature Craig MacLellans soothing and searching vocals. The music gets in your head on first listen. It doesn't require you to listen a few times to acclimatize to it, you already knew it somehow... You can hear the forest in there, you can hear the city, you can hear the stars. Put your headphones on, lie back watch and listen to the Descending Stars.
Cedar's Album Release Party for Sturdy Soldier Do Your Worst
—December 14th 2007-Rancho Relaxo.
That was a great set at The Embassy. A swirling, inspired sound that blends shimmering guitars, undercurrent of melody, into hypnotic soundscapes. A well-executed sound that meshes trippy rock and indie songcraft.
Hali certainly is home :) good deduction skills, gentlemen! How have you been? My cedar pin is proudly displayed on my favourite brown coat :) cheers -Meghan
Cedar is a pulsing concoction of shimmering energy and melody, yet thrusting with guitar-driven riffs, that sprawls with the spirit of early 90's alt-rock. Great band.
