Running your anger

This was forced, cathartic, screaming and crying, similar in technique to Primal Therapy. However, it is not yet ascertained whether Mel Wasserman was a follower of Dr. Arthur Janov. Although, it is interesting to note that John Lennon explored primal therapy in his album Plastic Ono Band, and the music from that album is used in the I & Me Workshop. Running your anger was an expected part of emotional growth at the CEDU schools, and normally involved being worked up into a lather, either by yourself or your peers and staff, via methods such as screaming confrontation, browbeating, humiliation and regression/guided imagery (i.e. remembering things from your past.) Running your anger was always done from one position... that of sitting in your chair, doubled over, fists or hands around your head, and screaming at the floor. Most often, the episode would be started off by the student shouting "FUUUCK" or "FUUUUCCCK YOOOU!" This statement was usually addressed at their "negative thinking" (explained below.) Running your anger always caused large expectorations of mucus from the nose and mouth which dribbled as a constant stream from the student's head to the floor. Occasionally, students would also vomit. Running your anger was also known as running your shit.

Perambulating Carcass

“I can admit to you that I fear death. Not that which we imagine about death, for such hear is its self imaginary. And not my death as it will be set down with a date in the public records. But that death I suffer every moment, the death of that voice, which out of the depths of my childhood, keeps questioning me as it does you: “Who am I”? Everything in and around us seems to conspire to strangle it once and for all. Whenever that voice is silent… and it doesn’t speak often… I am and empty body – a perambulating carcass. I’m afraid that one day it will fall silent forever, or that it will speak too late!”

About me:
Welcome! CEDU school graduates! I am a graduate from the early 90's and thought it would be nice to have us all in one place, whether you went to CEDU, RMA OR Cascade..... for news, updates, and whatever else!

"See you as you truly are and DO something about it" That is what we were always told CEDU meant. It actually stands for Charles E. Dederich University . Please check out how Mel Wasserman changed the way troubled teens are helped, using "tools, exercises and fundamentals" that he learned from Synanon.

CEDU TIMELINE
The Wasserman Years
1960s: Mel Wasserman

Founded by Mel Wasserman first began listening to kids and interacting with them in the '60s when he lived in Palm Springs.

(somehow, this morphed into parents paying Mel to take their kids, and turn them into....well, hopefully solid adults)

1967--Running Springs, California: Wasserman sells his furniture business in Palm Springs, and with some support, opens Running Springs (CEDU high school) as a for-profit entity. Some accounts have the date as 1968. ( I'm not sure why he chose for-profit, as the not-for-profit model had some advantages, other than the lack of IRS scrutiny as to expenses.)
1972--Mark Hughes, the Herbalife founder, sent to CEDU by father (?). Part of the "recovery" was to sell raffle tickets door-to-door. Hughes stays .. graduation, selling the CEDU school to parents. (source: People Weekly 4/29/1985)
1982--CEDU expanded to Northern Idaho, Bonners Ferry (or 1983? Dates vary)--Rocky Mountain Academy.
1983--Lon Woodbury admissions director for CEDU's Rocky Mountain Academy.
1987--Mount Batchelor Academy founded by College Health Enterprises. (not a CEDU enterprise, but founder later joins a CEDU enterprise)
1988--Lon Woodbury leaves CEDU's Rocky Mountain Academy.
1988--Doug Kim-Brown is headmaster of Rocky Mountain Academy.
1989--Mel and Brigette Wasserman move to Monterey Peninsula
1990--CEDU High School accredited by WASC.
1991--CEDU High School expands to Middle School
1993--Doug Kim-Brown leaves job as headmaster of Rocky Mountain Academy.
1993--Boulder Creek Academy started -- third CEDU School.
1993--Rocky Mountain Academy changes policy, will accept children on psychotropic medication (meaning, antidepressants, medication for bi polar, ADHD medications, etc.)
1994--July--Rocky Mountain Academy Student commits suicide.
1994--Northwest Academy founded. Purpose is to get troubled, but not-too-troubled, high school juniors and seniors to finish high school and have the skills to go on to college effectively.
1994--ASCENT, CEDU's therapeutic wilderness program, founded
1994--Len Woodward reviews Brown Schools
1994 -- Brandi Elliot joins CEDU
1995--Tim Marshall joins Brown Schools.
1996--Jan. 31: Healthcare America announced that John P. Harcourt, Jr. has been elected president and chief executive officer and Michael C. Piercey, M.D., executive vice president and medical director of the company; their assignment is to lead the company through Chapter 11 bankruptcy. By 1999 Harcourt is CEO of Brown Schools.
1997--Riot at Northwest Academy (CEDU) , in which students are injured and the Boundary County Sheriff's department is called in.
1997-- In November, The Brown Schools terminated 29 employees in a broad-based reduction of its workforce. William H. Bettcher III and co-worker Diane Roper were among those terminated. Bettcher was 65 years old and Roper was 60. On August 11, 1998, Roper (a female) filed a sex and age discrimination suit.
1997--The Brown Schools' North American Boarding Schools division begins planning a new boarding school. Paul Dudley Hart is the President of the Education Services Group of The Brown Schools.
1997--Northwest Academy, a new venture of the CEDU Family of Educational Services. is announced.
1998--April Kevin Accomazzo's family and Stanton Lewis files suit against CEDU for maltreatment in the Idaho programs, including the riot in 1997.

The Brown Schools / McCown deLeeuw Years

1998--Brown Schools' division North American Boarding Schools opens St. George School, for kids who are stuggling but not yet in the deep hole of the CEDU programs. Linda Houghton, Founder, and Rebecca Plona, Admissions Counselor

Founder Linda Houghton is adamant that King George School is not a therapeutic school, and thus any diagnosis a child as is usually incidental to what she is looking for in prospective students....” She sees King George School as a regular boarding school that accepts the fact all teens have mental, emotional and physical needs in order to grow up. Her vision is that as old institutions such as family, church and community weaken, something needs to replace them in order to help teens make the changes needed to become successful adults. She feels a new vision of boarding schools is necessary to help their students compensate for the increasing absence of one in the older weakening institutions.

1999--October 26: The Brown Schools announced the placement of $15 million of subordinated debt with Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA). The purpose of the debt is to continue its expansion efforts and remain a leader in providing education and behavioral services to the country's youth.

"We are accelerating The Brown Schools' growth plan and felt that TIAA would make a strong strategic partner," said Thomas P. Riley, Chairman and CEO. "To have secured such a long-term relationship with someone of TIAA's reputation is important to us. Our discussions with them have focused on the availability of capital for growth on a green field basis as well as through acquisitions. TIAA is excited about the company's growth prospects."

TIAA's investment will finance current expansion of the Company's Education Group to include operations in Vermont, Nebraska, Houston and Dallas, Texas. It also provides for expansion of programs and services in Idaho and The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico that are assigned to its Specialty Behavioral Group.

In a project with The Brown Schools’ residential programs in Idaho, the leadership team raised census by over 25 percent while significantly reducing incidents and accidents and trimming operating costs. In addition to focusing resources at a facility level, we helped the management team develop and use emotional intelligence to connect more effectively.

Sherry Thornton was Brown Schools’ COO at the time; she intuitively saw the gap between departments and between management and line staff, so we quantified the issues for her with the climate assessment. “The Lights, Camera, Action process helped focus our change effort and increased buy-in from staff,” says Thornton. By sharing the results with each facility team, staff felt heard and could support efforts to improve the workplace environment.

“I look forward to working with Marguerite and Tom to solidify The Brown Schools’ position as the leading company providing services to solve the complex problems that young people face and further our reputation as the thought leader and standard-setter in our industry. MDC has a history of investing in growth companies like The Brown Schools. With her background in education and youth services and her experience building growth companies, Marguerite Sallee is the right person to lead the company forward,”

The position is new; McLaughlin will be responsible for assessing and strengthening existing educational programs; identifying strategic opportunities, including acquisitions; providing industry guidance; and representing the company with educational organizations and opinion leaders across the country. He will report directly to chief executive officer Marguerite W. Sallee.

"Education is a vital part of the work that we do in helping children with extraordinary needs reach their potential and become productive members of society," Sallee said. "John brings a strong desire to serve these special students and a lifetime of knowledge and expertise in education, in particular for-profit education. His decision to give up a successful advisory business to join our company confirms his belief in The Brown Schools.

I'm glad I found this page...I think the CEDU experience is unique enough that it does mentally set us apart, just a smidgen...I was there from January to October of 2004. I've lost a lot of my memory since then, so while I can't remember names, etc. I'd REALLY like to get in tough with the people that were part of my journey back then.
(at the high school) So if anyone who comes across this was there at that time, send me a quick message, I'd love to chat!

I enjoyed my time at cedu... definaatly not at first but it was a great time in my life. I saw no abuse the entire time i was there. and i started the Loyalists (if you can rembember that)

any one who says different is just whining. honestly, no one liked it when we first got there and we all said we were being abused. just because some whining girl got her father to sue the company does not make her rediculus claims true. i would not be where i am today if it were not for CEDU MIDDLE SCHOOL.

i find it disturbing on what is being labeld as"Child abuse" and "child labor" on some of the statements i have heard on the videos that are posted on this page. Is there any honesty left from the past CEDU servivors? it would seem that we are adults now and would be able correctly judge certain incodences correctly. For example doing chores everymorning to keep our dorms clean is not"child labor", having to chop fire would so we could have fires in the winter to keep us warm, or shoveling snow in the morning so we could have walkways to get around campous; none of these examples qualify as "child abuse" or "child labor". taking turns to clean dishes or the eating areas is simple common sense of typical chores inwhich we would have been doing anyways at home with our familys.
Removing a child from potentiol dangerous suroundings as well as removing contact with all possible negative people is to help protect the child from additional mentally and/or physical harm caused by others outside of the program. when a child is sent to such a program they have proved the fact that they were not capable of choosing a healthy lifestyle, due to eithor parental and/or other personel abuse/neglect, and/or mentally unstable friends; therefore the program was designed to help put us back on the right track so we could understand the TRUE meaning of friendship, understand that we could love ourselfs as much as we love others.
have we forgotten all the reasonings? why is only one side of the debate being portrayed? this depressess me, we are supposed to be a family, because no one else will understand what we have been through in our lives! yet all that i see is a group of people that are trying to acuse the wrong defendant in these cases. CEDU helped give me my life back as it did with many other CEDU survivors i find it insulting to see us turn our backs and ecnore these false accusations.

Jul 21 2008 9:06 AM

i do agree....mentally unstable faculty shoul have been the ones to blaim instead of the programs themselfs. the outline of the program's intentions were and are meant to better themselfs as human beings. to even prove my point most of the tools that were taught at Cedu are used in sobriety programs as well as methods for living sober, healthy lifestyles still in current times. Most of these programs like A.A. and N.A. and so forth, consist of people that choose these tools to inspire their way of living a healthy life. i do understand that the outline of these programs are not meant for everyone, however since the programs did not garuntee 100%, the program is not to blame. However an unstable staff member can take the program's outline out of the original context, inwhich later resulting in a child abuse/neglect incodent; only to prove that it is "unstable uathorities to blameand not the program itself.

Um... As A CEDU graduate of one of the most brutal era's .... I don't blame CEDU for my "unsuccessful" life because I AM successful like many other graduates that I know. I DO though.. hold those faculty that were UNSUCCESSFUL and AND THE PROGRAM responsible for MANY the "hardships" that I had to endure to achieve my success. And I'm not some dumb rich kid.
Mike's Playmate!

Jul 2 2008 9:08 AM

we can blaim our unsucessful lifes all we want on a program that was created to help people that were at one time not wanted in society. how can we expect staff to live perfect lifes... as far as im concerned the programs should not be blaimed for what happend to the kids. the staff members that were mentally unstable are to blame, not the program itself. we also must realize that we were no prized children when we attendid the programs and in fact we did not know ourselfs and most of us still dont because instead of looking forward in life for a mentally stable well being, most of us throw tantrums about how "badly" we were treated. i know quite a few past students that talk so much crap about the programs when infact there was no abuse at all. probably about 70% of these stories i do believe are nothin but rich kid fibs.

i was there for two years, started the loyalists, went off enough times to know, and i never saw any abuse, physical for emotional. people were restrained for the saftey of themselves and others. and was not the fear of that part of the fun of going off? I do not believe the school should have been shut down.

Alot of what i stated before in my comment was true to the fact that i liked the friends from CEDU but i want to acknowledge that alot of unorthodox things happened there as most of us know. There was verbal physical and emotional abouse at the middle school as well as the high school .

Some of it even scarred me for years.
I will always appreciate the endurance fo uncomfortable situations it gave me and the comrades going though the hard experience.

Treatment for minors should be more regulated on how they can interact with you as the guy on the youtube video said.

I was wondering also if BCA a branch of CEDU in northern idaho is still running and if so someone please message me and let me know. Id like to eseach that and see what thee program is like now.

Its sad CEDU got shut down. I struggled after i left and i think part of it was resentment from being sent there. But it was one of the most influential experiences of my life. It advanced me mentally and emotionally so much faster than all my friends back home. It seemed like the worst thing while i was there but i had so much fun and made some of the most true friends. The propeets give you a chance to search your self unlike nothing else, especially at that young age. Its cool that you have tis page for us. It brings joy to go down memory lane, and sadness to that i avent kept in touch with hardly anyone besides one person.

ANyway my names Joseph Cashen i was at CEDU middle school in running springs from december 1999 til december 2001. If anyone remembers me send me a message id love to catch up.

cedu was abusive when i was there, rudy bentz was sadistic and megalomaniacle. i was at the hearings in dc and saw the testimonies, and met kat. the real problem is a lack of teen rights. all americans must have rights, teens, prisoners, detainees, enemies, gay peoeple, transgender, ill, poor, strange. we let them cross whole sections of us off the list, and we pay. the more we respect, the more respect we create for ourselves and our children.
NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Thank you for putting this together...while many of us have "struggled" since gratuation cedu gave us the ablity to get through it and grow up much faster than our less fortunate peers. cedu has givin me a better understanding of the world and people around me (and more importantly myself)
those who have been have a certain wisdom than many will never know.

(damn that was corny)
but seriously...

I'm glad that most people had great experinces at Cedu, but i'm one of the people that knows it can mess up a child or a teenager. I was there from 92-93 about a year and a half, was in the middle school for a year then moved up to highschool. The friends i made when I was in the middle school i was no longer aloud to talk to when I moved to highchool for a 13 year old kid thats an emotional wreck and then they only let me talk to a few after I confessed all my nasty past and all the stuff that went on in my past to 20 different strangers. ran away later on and was gone 4 days cause I actually took the back side of the mountian cause I didn't want to get caught. They sent me to assent which I actually enjoyed, then to boulder creek academy where I tried to kill myself to get away from there. so I belive that the negitive stuff did happen to the children thoughout the years.

OMG I totally forgot about half of that terminology!! Copping out, smooshing, propheets. Anyone for a DMT?? LMAO. I hate to say it, but my behavior got worse after I left CEDU in Feb. of '98. That probably had more to do w/my parents divorce though.
Anyway, Cheers! CEDU alumni, we survived right?? LOL

WOW talk about flashing back...I graduated Cedu (running springs) June of 93. I have to say that i was one of those kids that the programed helped. I have no regrets about my time there. It would be great to meet up with people that i knew there. I also wanted to say nice time line but as for the middle school in Running Springs It opened while i was there and my younger brother atteneded it i believe that it opened in 91 I was in the challenge group when he started to attened so i believe that is right.
