When solo, I am voice and guitar. I am also blessed to be able to play with the following musicians in various combinations:
Chris Ellis (guitar, piano, vocals, tabla),
Rosie Toll (violin, vocals),
Dave Sturt (bass),
Jeffrey Davenport (kit drums),
Brian Boothby (djembe and flute),
Robin Gillmor (vocals and percussion)
Influences
I am inspired by the spirit and listening of Praying for the Rain, Mike Scott and The Waterboys, Tracy Chapman, Sarah McLachlan, Suzanne Vega, Domenic DeCicco, U2, Peter Gabriel, Chris Ellis, Robbie Robertson, Seize the Day, Amma, Neale Donald Walsh, Eckhart Tolle, Tim "Mac" MacCartney who founded Embercombe the "centre for inspiring committed action towards a truly sustainable world" in Devon, the west coast of Canada where I grew up, the sea, the rainforest, Yew Trees, The Coast of Cornwall, Glastonbury, My parents, Robin Gillmor, Craig Patterson, People who truly embody presence and listening, Angels
I was born on the west coast of Canada in 1977, and have always loved to sing. At age 16, I was given my first guitar and inspired by artists like Tracy Chapman and the Beatles, I began to write my own songs and to perform them down at the Inner Harbour in Victoria. I always knew I was meant to be a performer, but spent the next several years focusing that energy into acting for film and theater, rather than music. In 1999, an opportunity arose for me to study abroad in England. Nurtured by the vibrant acoustic music scene there, I decided to postpone my degree and to stay in the UK to follow my heart and my dream. Over the last 9 years in England, I have been blessed to have many fantastic playing experiences both on my own and with some very special musicians. Some of the highlights have been supporting the Proclaimers at the Waterfront in Norwich, playing the National Theatre, Glastonbury Festival, Stainsby Festival, Gaunt's House, Embercombe, playing with our 6 piece ensemble (me, Chris Ellis, Rosie Toll, Brian Boothby, Dave Sturt and Jeffrey Davenport) and some very magical campfires. I have also recently met the wonderful live music scene on Canada's West Coast and am grateful for the influence that has had on me and my music. As well as performing, in the last several years I have enjoyed making three self-produced albums, "Live at Gaunt's House" (2000), "Listening" (2002) and "In This Time" (2007). Also, in 2008, Chris Ellis and Celeste Lovick made an album together called "Sheltering Tree". During these years I have found great inspiration in artists such as Praying for the Rain and The Waterboys. I am grateful for all the creative people I meet who work in this way, bringing through music and other art forms which remind us of the connectedness of all things, of what it means to be present, loving and compassionate.
Every time that we listen & write music... play an instrument... sing & dance... act in a play... or work in some audio/image/video engineering process... something is healing inside...
When we share it with friends... something is healing all over...
What hope do we offer the nuclear race? And what do we do with the nuclear waste? We can’t bury it down, it can’t swim in the sea, So what do we do with this grim legacy? Well I’ll tell you the truth, and I’ll make it quite plain, We can’t shoot it in space, or let it wash down the drain.
So we leave it behind for the kids yet to come, That bittersweet taste of the nuclear bomb.
Well the kids of tomorrow have no words to say For the world we leave and the price they will pay.
Caretakers are we and for what do we stand? For the love of the life on this sacred land.
What hope for the child in this world of ill care Lies deep with the meek on a wing and a prayer, That these Gods will see reason for the land, sea, and air, And the hope in the future for the life that lives there.
Caretakers are we, and for what do we stand? For the love of the life on this sacred land.
What reason for money when you can’t breathe the air? And the oceans and lakes they lay barren and bare, And the streams and the rivers run sewerage and poison With no drink to spair, Caretakers are we, and for what do we stand? For the love of the life on this sacred land.
The ice caps are melting thers holes in the sky, we poison the earth for the sake of a lie, its time for the one and the all standing by to take hold of the reigns and put an end to this crime for we are the meek and now is our time,,,,caretakers are we and for what do we stand,, for the love of all life on this sacred land www. goodisplanetearth.
