Cellist Rachel Gawell (born 1988) has collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Simone Fontanelli, and Alarm Will Sound members Courtney Orlando, Elizabeth Stimpert, John Pickford Richards, and Alan Pierson. Born and raised in the United States, Ms. Gawell has performed extensively in the USA and abroad. She has already commissioned and premiered dozens of new works for solo cello and for chamber ensemble, including music by John Crouch, Kevin Clark, Chris McDonald (PdL), and Alex Temple. In spring ’08 Ms. Gawell completed an accelerated Bachelor of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory, for which she was accepted a year in advance. While in Baltimore, Rachel participated in the area’s new and experimental music scene, including the premiere-only concert series After Now and the High Zero festival for experimental improvised music. In the fall of 2008 Rachel will attend the Rotterdam Conservatory for their newly established Masters of Music program, focusing on new music performance and researching the incorporation of cello in such non-traditional idioms as Indian and jazz music. In recent summers, Rachel has attended the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, Henry Mancini Institute for Emerging Professional Musicians, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Ms. Gawell has appeared on Maryland Public Broadcasting’s Art Works This Week and twice on Public Radio International’s From The Top, a showcase of young classical musicians.
