Artist Biography: Singer. Songwriter. Producer. Artist. What happens when Bob Marley meets Coldplay? ….the birth of a new music movement. Summed up in one artist, Cello “Tha Black Pearl” fuses hip hop, pop, soul and rock with his reggae/island roots to produce a sound that is unlike any other. Compared to artists like D’Angelo, Damian and Steven Marley, Cee-Lo and Will I Am, Cello truly stands in a category by himself. Inspired by the greats and motivated by his contemporaries, in his latest effort, he pushes the boundaries and manages to authentically merge many musical genres into a single identity-“Electric Piano”. While sitting in his studio in his Atlanta home Cello explains how he feels about his craft. “Music is a life line for me.” Cello says. “The music of the Bahamas will always be a part of my soul, where I began, but I have also made room for the musical legacy and creativity I have discovered and really fallen in love with here in the states. I am so inspired by the work of Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, and Ronnie Butler but also cats like Jay-Z and Wyclef. These are men who have redefined the game on their own terms." In his latest work, Cello sets out to make his mark. His sometimes smooth, sometimes hard-hitting vocals are enhanced by Caribbean rhythms, to produce what the artist calls “Hip-Pop Ragga Soul.” Music has been a central part of Cello’s life since he was a child, when he and his family sang together in church. Surrounded by musicians, a young veteran of the stage, theater and vocal quartets, Cello was discovered at a musical competition in Nassau, by the Bahamian group CODA. After breaking ground in the Bahamas, CODA moved to the United States in pursuit of their music dreams. The band eventually broke up and the members went their separate ways. Cello, now a solo artist, would go on to sing, write, play, and produce his first two albums, “Imported” and “Imported Vol. 1.5.” Both were released to great reviews. Preparing for the release of his third album, “Electric Piano”, Cello has been the frequent and popular guest of the Bahamas top D.J.’s playlist. His first single “Living the Life” is poised to take the 1 spot on the Bahamian charts and will be making its way to the US in late summer. His recent collaboration “Go,” (which was co-written and produced by Cello) with popular Caribbean artist TaDa topped the charts at 1 in Spring 2009 and remains a hot single in heavy rotation throughout the Caribbean.
