We were born to perform. From the moment that we were able to walk and talk we would collectively entertain the guests for hours even if we saw a yawn or a sleepy nod... it only served to increase the volume on the songs or exaggerate the dance movements as the motto was the "SHOW MUST GO ON"!
We are three sisters Fiona (22) born in Los Angeles, Nayome (20) and Evangeline (18) both born in Ireland who were destined to pursue a life in music. From a young age watching our Irish Grandad entertain our friends and relations whenever a crowd gathered and a few pints were downed by playing the spoons or singing a rendition all his own of "I'll take you home again Kathleen" or Al Jolsons' "Mammy" surely intrigued us to want to do the same. "LEADER OF THE BAND"!
Also our mother Marie and our two Aunties Susan and Eileen had a folk group "The Corcoran Sisters" when they were growing up in LA in the late 60's early 70's and again continuing when the family moved to Ireland in 1973. So music was in our blood!
In the summer of 2002 an opportunity presented itself and ultimately became the motivation for us to form the sister group SIROCCO.
We entered a major talent competition and performed a song written by Fiona to which we put our own choreography and won first prize. It was just the beginning of so much more!
Our first encounter with fame was when we entered RTE's “You’re a Star” a TV Talent search in Ireland. We wanted to enter our song into the Eurovision Song Contest which was the only way of doing so at the time. The judges were blown away by our vocals and harmonies but Nayome and Evangeline were too young to progress to the next stage of the competition. It didn't deter us though ... it only served to make us more determined!
We performed back up vocals for Simon Casey at the Point Theatre in Dublin, appeared on RTE 2 and TNA G. We self produced our Irish album "Black is the Color" and released it in 2005 and managed to have it played on all major Radio Stations throughout Ireland. We appeard in the prestigious Irish fashion magazine VIP as well as numerous Irish news papers ie. The Kerryman, Sunday World and The Irish Independent .
We performed for thousands of fans in our native Ireland and created excitement every time we hit the stage! We certainly didn't let them yawn or fall asleep with our colorful performances, many costume changes and our own entertaining renditions of "Cry Me A River" James Browns' "I Feel Good" or an Elvis Medley!!! Never a dull moment....thanks Grandad!
We were enjoying a growing fanbase and popularity in Ireland but we wanted something more.....
In 2005, much to the disappointment of our teachers and fellow students, we moved from our native Ireland to the big lights of New York city with our recently released Irish album "BLACK IS THE COLOR". The Irish communities in New York welcomed us and we had many radio and TV presentations such as "OUT OF IRELAND" as well as being invited to perform for Governor Pataki on St. Patricks Day at the prestigious Waldorf Astoria.
We desperately searched for a Producer that could help put music to our own songs. We found so many wonderful and top class Producers that helped us explore our musical talents experimenting with Hip-Hop and R&B. It helped us grow in our musical knowledge and expand our understanding of the diversity of music. We worked with the stage name DEFY* as we kept our Sirocco name to continue to promote our Irish album, but searched for new image. The name DEFY* encompassed what we felt about the world, at the time, as young women pursuing our life long ambition in the rocky and unstable ground of the music world. Nobody or nothing was going to defeat us even though we had to overcome so many obstacles. Our love for our Irish music was great and we wanted to reach so many more listeners with our messages of inspiration and cross many more musical boundaries.
We didn't want to isolate ourselves and put ourselves in the CELTIC box but still felt that our celtic roots and celtic soul was just a spring board that would soon catapult our music to all corners of the world.
Three years living and working in the city helped us to grow as people and artists, to understand life's challenges and to know that no matter what happens "you must always follow your heart". For your heart never lies. If you listen to your inner voice it always whispers the truth.
So our inner voice has lead us back to ourselves.......
We recently made the move to Los Angeles ("California here I come....right back where I started from!") and found some wonderful Producers of MJ Productions who has helped us put the pieces of the puzzle together.
The music that we are currently working on and soon to launch is truly who we are. We have found ourselves after searching long and hard, like Dorothy in the Wizard of OZ, and we think that you are really going to love what you hear.
Because it's from our heart....and the heart never lies!.................
