If you're from the NSW Central Coast and are interested in playing Ultimate Frisbee, then you'll be delighted to know that things are looking up for a local competition.
UPDATE : Things are looking good for a field!
Gosford City Council have indicated that Leagues Club field across from Central Coast Leagues, Bluetongue Stadium and just up from Belinda Neal's favourite bar is available on Monday nights. Whilst this field might not be protected from southerly winds coming up off Brisbane Water, the fact that it is close to Gosford Train Station and offers us super-high visibility means that it not only will be easy for those relying on public transport to get to, but will also mean that we'll get awesome exposure and will hopefully result in more people coming to play!
In the meantime, we just want to let people know that we are working towards getting something started, and invite you to spread the word and keep in touch. If you would like to be added to the list of interested players, have any suggestions on other fields we might try and secure, or have any other queries or comments you'd like to make, just send your contact details to huckandgiggle@centralcoastultimatefrisbee.com.au or log onto the website at www.centralcoastultimatefrisbee.com.au and join the mailing list.
If you would like to help get the word out, download the flyer which you can take and stick up somewhere that other potential members will see it. Remember, the more people we get along, the cheaper it will be so get the word out there.
If you're not familiar with the sport, the easiest way of describing it is a seven-a-side game that shares attributes with netball, AFL, gridiron and touch football. The team in control of the frisbee attempts to advance the disc down the field towards their endzone by passing it to a member of the offensive team. Once it is caught, the player must stop (just like in netball) and look for another team-mate to pass it to. To score, a member of the offensive team must catch the frisbee in the endzone.
On defense, it is up to those players to mark the offensive team and try and force a turnover through an incomplete pass, an out of bounds throw, or an interception. They don't even need to catch the disc - just batting it down will do. Once a turnover has been achieved, the offense becomes the defense and vice versa.
After every point, the teams switch endzones, and the team that scored throws the frisbee from the goal line towards the defence on the other goal line.
There are many strategies and tactics involved in playing, and the level of play goes from fun and casual games through to national representative games.
