Damanta is a medly of wayward Irish bards and itinerant Canadian minstrels, brought together by Elegwen Ó Maoileóin.
Damanta was founded in January 2005, during the end of his studies in seminary. Taking the advice of his Bishop to explore the world while he was still young, Damanta began. They recorded "Alive On Pentecost" in St Augustine’s Church on Pentecost in 2006, and will release an EP at the end of 2007 entitled, The Drunken Priest: and the ghostly hymns of autumn, prior to their first full studio album, Amárac scheduled for early 2008.
Live, the band performs a variety of traditional Celtic songs and tunes, while on recordings Damanta sticks exclusively to original songs and melodies which unite the old Celtic and new contemporary musical styles. Reviews (The Celtic Connection have compared them to Planxty, but as they would prefer to be known, like Planxty on craic!
Damantais an Irish (Gaelic) word with lots of meanings. "Damned" is one. As it was taken from a poem by Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, for the band’s name. On Radio Na Gaeltachta it is occasionally used to mean "deadly" (a coloquialism for "cool"); while the old people on Inis Mor said they use it often as the most extreme superlative. Or that it can mean, "very very great" or "brilliant." Congratulations, you have just earned credit toward a linguistics degree.
