GeneralCooperative living, community building, and sustainability. Healthy living, cooperative learning, and saving our planet, with a sense of humor.
MusicWe love music! Come play at our Monday evening Co-op Cafe!
MoviesWe love movies! We sometimes show them at our Monday evening Co-op Cafe, when we cannot get a band to play, or a comedian to perform.
TelevisionSome of us hate TV, but we have a number of serious "Lost" fans, many fans of "The X-Files," and every Superbowl Sunday, we have an "Unhealthy Living Party," with greasy food that we normally avoid.
BooksThe Moosewood Cookbook
HeroesWe are all different, so we have diverse heroes.

   Washington University Cooperative Network's Blurbs
About me:
The Washington University Cooperative (www.washucoop.com) was founded in Spring 2003, and became a Student Union group in Spring 2004, after we organized our core group by means of a rotating pot luck series. Since Autumn 2004 we have provided alternative off-campus housing for Washington University Undergraduates, in two University-owned buildings, "The Perry," and another building, next door. Non-students may reside in the Cervantes House, across the street, a privately owned Coop annex. We are working to expand our Cooperative Network, and to create an open Coop Campus, including residence for graduate students, faculty, staff, and neighbors. We have compiled a model Guide for Cooperative Living. The Coop's educational outreach division is the Cervantes Free University and Learning Cooperative, www.cfu-lc.com, www.washucoop-library.com (http://groups.myspace.com/cervantesfreeuniversity) The Perry's basement has been renovated to serve as a venue for community events. The WashU Coop works closely with the Skinker DeBaliviere Community Council and the CoLibri Coop (the St Louis NASCO affiliate), and other local cooperatives. The WashU Coop has no official RA or Faculty Associate, because we all play those roles to each other, helping and teaching each other, and ensuring a safe and healthy environment to share. The WashU Coop's Six Pillars, established by the Founders, are: Community Building Environmental Sustainability Healthy Living Social Responsibility Cooperative Learning Leadership Here are some other Coop Core Values: Diversity Integrity Gravity Levity Our Committees seek to promote these Pillars, and are open to anyone, not only Coop residents.
Who I'd like to meet:
Other Cooperators and Cooperatives! Also bands, comedians, businesses, diverse advocacy groups (although we endorse nothing in particular), and politicians (although we endorse nobody), in line with Washington University's controversial "Neutrality Policy." We honor our own "Pluralism Policy," perhaps best expressed by Gene Rodenberry, "Infinite diversity in infinite combinations."

Thanks for the add. ¶ The electoral sprint is over, and we've had a couple of weeks to catch our breath, but we still have a long trek ahead. We need to find a sustainable pace again. ¶ And it will be a new pace, because the terrain has changed. We've reached a higher elevation. I don't know how much more Obama will accomplish, but already he has led us to reject fearmongering, racism, and lies as electoral tactics. Over half our society has now affirmed that understanding is more important than "toughness." And some of the remaining people will now become easier to reach, because they are driven to conform to whatever they perceive as the majority, and that's now us. They may linger in denial for a time, but that will pass. ¶ Our struggle will be less obvious now; our adversaries will be more diffuse. I doubt that we'll be calling for impeachment. I expect that we'll rally in support of Obama on some issues and against him on others, but really it will be about the issues, not about him. ¶ We are still possessed by institutional and cultural demons: the military-industrial complex, consumerism, materialism, alienation, apathy, and other side effects of laissez faire. Those will all be exorcised only when our society understands our present situation and our alternatives. That understanding is spreading, but slowly; the corporate news media isn't helping. ¶ To change the world, we must change our culture; to do that, we must see more clearly; to do that, we must change ourselves. For a start, just talk with people -- that may not sound like much, but really it's huge. Share whatever you've understood about who we are and what we can become. Each of us knows only part of the song. Keep singing, hoping, resisting, questioning, loving. Hand in hand, we may heal this world. We're all in this together.
