Born to musically inclined parents Rupert & Sonia Cunningham, as Co-founder Ashanti & Bamboo Records it was through his father that Cezars musical journey began. The London based labels produced reggae that was geared towards the West Indian population, and fostering Europes love affair with Jamaican music. It was poring over his extensive record collection as a child that Cezar discovered the sounds of Marley, Tosh, Cliff, Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Armstrong, King Cole, Redding & a myriad of others. This early exposure fueled his own musical inclinations and later formed the basis of the originality, approach & delivery that would set him apart from others in the reggae and dancehall arena.
While at university in the US, he joined a fledgling band of talented Jamaican youngsters called Earthvibes, the band would coalesce on summers to perform at small shows in Kingston. He later taught himself guitar after attending a Lucy Pearl concert & finding a guitar pick that lead singer Raphael Saadiq had thrown into the crowd. I thought it was a sign he says, I still have it!
In 2003 Cez returned to Jamaica to fulfill his vision of reggae soul. His first release 'Sexyways' on the Thundaclap rhythm garnered much airplay as did the video for the single. With its release on the Greensleeves Records compilation, it was put into rotation on BBC radios reggae & dancehall show in the UK. The fusion of musical influences that balanced his pop and R&B infused vocal style and guitar riffs with hardcore dancehall beats resulted in a fresh sound that generated a flurry of press and more hot collaborations with popular dancehall producers. Work with legendary producer Tony Kelly spawned the melodically infectious 'Noise', 'Knockin At Your Door' produced by Steven Gibbo Gibbs , Renaissance produced 'Lay U Down' which remains very popular on the international hit Stepz rhythm.
Among his newer releases are 'Wasted Seasons', 'Take the Fall' produced by Zero Gravity, is a lilting ballad about letting go of ones fears & giving into the vulnerability of being in love. The accompanying video was shot in HD format in NYC by directors Nadia Sampson & Tim Naylor. The video, of the highest quality in concept & execution is now broadcast globally on BETJ! Cez is also featured on the renaissance produced Icebreaka!. His guitar is prominent throughout & his single 'Irresistible' is sure to take his sound deeper into the hearts of those who already love it.
Other collaborators include Flabba, Master Lee, Gee-Jam studios Alborosie & Grammy nominated producer David Kennedy, with whom the soon-to-be-released 'Keep On' was recorded.
This singer-songwriter & talented producer has made enormous strides in a very short time. He has written for other artists such as Tami Chynn, Wayne Marshall and Machel Montano. His fan base continues to grow significantly thanks to having his videos in heavy rotation and performances and appearances at such events as Air Jamaica Jazz n Blues 06, RE High School Tour, Entertainment Report, Antigua Splash, Temptation Live, RE Unplugged, Negril Spring Break & CVMs Tha Party. The E-Spot, Weekenz, The Village and other local and international shows. He has been covered by major local newspapers & local and international magazines.
There are no limits to what Cezar will accomplish. He remains devoted to his mission of taking his music to the world. He has the tools. He has drive and talent. He has the image. Most importantly, he has the heart. Open your ears, turn up the radio, listen out and request Cezar.
