About me: Founded twenty-two years ago by Joyce Rumsfeld and a small group of concerned citizens, the Chicago Foundation for Education (CFE) is a non-profit organization supports Chicago’s public school students through the educators who serve, guide, and teach them. In 2007-08, CFE programs involved more than 1,800 teachers, directly benefiting more than 50,000 students at almost 400 Chicago Public Schools across the city. Since 1985, CFE has invested almost 4 million dollars into supporting over 26,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) classrooms, directly benefiting nearly 900,000 students.

Currently, our programming includes the following initiatives: (1) CFE Small Grants, which support the design, implementation and dissemination of engaging curricular projects; (2) Study Groups, which provide experienced teachers with the opportunity to coach groups of six to eight other teachers in learning, adapting, and implementing effective, research-based instructional strategies and techniques; (3) Teachers Network Leadership Institute (TNLI), which selects and trains a corps of Chicago’s most outstanding teachers to conduct action research in their schools, and provides a venue for these teachers to share recommendations for improving student achievement with colleagues and local education decision-makers; and, (4) Fund for Teachers Grants (FFT), a program which enables teachers to pursue a professional growth experience of their own design to increase their instructional effectiveness with students.
In addition to these initiatives, CFE also offers forums for teachers from all Chicago public schools to exchange ideas. Our Teachers as Leaders and Learners symposium consists of presentations of grant-winning curricular projects, instructional strategies and action research findings. Our online Lesson Plan Database allows educators and parents anywhere to download step-by-step instructions for implementing our award winning projects.
