Saskatoon's Chad Munson has been composing and performing music since 1996. Playing in noise rock bands as a teenager, Chad's interest in electronic music grew greatly due to the influences of friend and collaborator Jake Hardy (aka Holzkopf). After many four-track experiments, Chad enlisted his first computer in 1997. After being frustrated with venues and the local music scene, the December 5th music cooperative was formed in 1998. This co-op with Hardy, Max Haiven (No Type), and Brennan Hart (Knar) was created to promote experimental electronic music in Saskatoon. With an overwhelming response to the music Dec5 promoted, 2 limited edition CD compilations were released which featured Munson's first electronic pieces.
In 2000 Chad started producing music as Foal. This new entity was created as a vehicle to push the usage of guitar in minimal techno. Foal's debut album, Re:construction was released by online label Nishi (a sub-label of No Type) in early 2003. The concept of Re:construction was to make accessible minimal techno and microsound from very limited resources; every sound on the entire 45 minute album was created from a 10 second sample of his acoustic guitar. Later in 2003 Foal saw his first physical release with a track on a Sfeericle Records compilation Sfeecd10 along side other artists Duul_Drv, Vitaminsforyou and Jeremy Gara (Arcade Fire, Kepler). 2005 marked the release of Foal's first full length CD Foliage released by Andrew Duke's Cognition Audioworks label. Foliage was an attempt to use guitar sounds with the same aesthetic as electronic sounds in minimal techno music. On Foliage all of the sounds other than percussive ones were created from electric guitar samples and manipulations. Cognition Audioworks also did an online stream/release of a live performance from 2004. 2005 marked the end of Foal and the final online release Atlantic Mass on Panospria Records out of Montreal. Atlantic Mass was a slight departure from the strictly guitar based minimal techno as Chad started to utilize more synthetic instruments and a broader range of sampled material. This release marks the end of the Foal project.
Chad spent the next 4 years focusing the bulk of his attention more on his bands American Geography and Golden Smoke. In 2008 Chad returned to making music, leaving the Foal name and minimal techno sound behind in favor of less beat driven guitar manipulations.
OUT NOW !!!(NOVEMBER 2008) :::::::::::::::...............::::::::::::::::...........:::::::::::::::.......... '4 Sonatas for Electroacoustic Thoughts' Francesco Giannico and Stefano Spataro A HYSM PRODUCTION :::::::::::::::...............::::::::::::::::...........:::::::::::::::.......... Music by Francesco Giannico and Stefano Spataro HYSM PRODUCTIONS http://www. myspace. com/haveyousaidmidi
4 Sonatas for electroacoustic thoughts is a microcosmos of modified sounds, folk-derived loops, noise nebulas in which it is not easy to see the light. The soundscapes are rough and elusive, but well-balanced, and never excessive. The work (4 tunes for a total length of about 20 minutes) comes from a collaboration between Francesco Giannico(www. myspace. com/markhamn) and Stefano Spataro(www. myspace. com/solquestprojects). In a pragmatic sense, the album is a mix of field recordings of an audio/video installation about Taranto's Ilva (made by Francesco Giannico) and electronic oscillations/acoustic hints (by Stefano Spataro). Nonmaterial sounds, layered over and over, folk memories and Interstellar Space strikes clash with discordant string lines and melodic scraps of an unspecified nature... A calm promenade in the unease of sound.

Forty minutes of intelligent play with electronically controlled sound experimentation. Songs filled with ambiences, strangely distorted beats, field recordings and orchestral elements. Rather atmospheric and mysterious than powerful. Nine compositions to be explored... and MORE .
