About me:

Native American womens fastpitch softball team formed in 1998. The birth of the Chahtas Native American Fast pitch Softball team began in August of 1998. Although that was the "Official" beginning of the Chahtas Team it has earlier roots as the team went thru numerous name changes along with personnel changes starting in 1993. The name "Chahta" came from a traditional phonetic spelling of the tribe Choctaw. The team was named Chahtas as it was originally made up of all Choctaw players which of course changed and it's roster has featured players from several different tribes over the years. The Chahtas(The name was spelled Chatas until 2006) team was the brain child of two sisters, Cheryl Billy and Yulonda Mathis along with the assistance of two cousins, Nona (James) Gipson and Sheila Watson. These four ladies wanted to establish a team that would not only compete primarily in the Oklahoma All Indian Circuit but also in open fast pitch tourneys. All four had played softball most of their lives. Watson had even played fast pitch for 2 years during the club season in 1982 and 1983 at Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma and was also on the varsity basketball team there for two years. Initially, the team was built around Watson, Billy, Mathis, Gipson and a fifth player Kristi Mitchell. Mitchell was a long time friend of the original four and had played on earlier versions of the Chahtas. Mitchell had also played fast pitch softball collegately in Kansas. Currently the team features players from the Choctaw,Chickasaw,Creek,Cherokee & Seminole tribes Overall record is Wins-151 Losses-72 with 11 tourney championships, 5 tourney MVPs & 31 all tourney awards.
