Influenced by distinguished artists like Bob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, G. Love, The Black Keys and Third Eye Blind, ChalupskY presents song-driven "rural-pop" music that compels careful listening. Not too far from what a young and still punk Elvis Costello might sound like, if he were writing dusty rock every Friday night at a pole-barn party.
Chris Chalupsky, a songwriter whose roots stem from a small town in Minnesota, would describe his approach towards crafting the somewhat quirky yet blue-collar music he creates as Seinfeld songwriting. That’s not to say he writes songs about nothing. “I try to express situations people can relate to by detailing little things involved - like the taste of orange juice and toothpaste in the morning, that’s what allows us to connect and put melody to memories.”
Imploring a passionate form of melancholy in much of his lyrical style, ChalupskY reveals songs like My July and Seasonal Living are at his core. As he recalls, “When I was young and first heard the word melancholic, I knew that it described me before knowing what it meant.”
A part of the South Bay (Southwestern coast of Los Angeles) creative community, it’s important for ChalupskY to keep it local while gaining a wider audience for the songs he writes and music he produces by working with other artists, events, and productions that are supportive of the laid back beach-cities/SoCal Scene. Collaborations with the founding guitarist & songwriter of Orson (Mercury Records/Universal Music) and producer Grant Nicholas (Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Mya, Toni Braxton), among others, have sprouted energetic new material. Instrumental contributions to tracks by TYGA (Decaydance Records, co-produced by Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy) and The Virgins (Atlantic Records) are currently climbing the charts. And ChalupskY proclaims he is increasingly excited about partnering with more and more writers, bands/artists and producers who share a same view of quality song craft. Add to this, further music industry success by way of A&R involvement with the popular band Say Anything – resulting in a deal with RCA/J Records (Clive Davis) – and this songwriter/musician/producer displays the talent and rapport for a long-standing career.
Currently placing music in TV & Film - including a recent licensing agreement with MTV for a handful of songs - as well as co-writing & producing several other up-and-coming band projects, ChalupskY continues “enjoying the process” in 2009, optimistically looking toward the future while holding a melancholic tinge for the past.
