Atlanta born and northwest raised, Chance Hayden began playing guitar at age eight and taking private lessons at ten. By fifteen he formed a rock and roll band and released a seven-inch single. During his junior and senior years of high school he was dual enrolled at Clark College, and performed with both schools’ jazz ensembles. At that time, Chance was recognized regionally for his talent winning five Outstanding Musician Awards at various competitions with his high school jazz band. In the spring of 2005 he toured Hawaii the Clark College Jazz Ensemble, just before receiving both his High School Diploma and Associates in Arts degree at the same time.
Understanding that the study of jazz at a university level college would provide a well-rounded musical education, Chance transferred to the PSU Jazz Studies program. Under the direction of Charley Gray, Chance continued to thrive through private studies with Dan Gildea, Darrell Grant, Dick Titterington and Bryan Johanson. During Chance’s first year at PSU he was one of two students selected statewide to receive the Portland Jazz Festival’s Bea Eidesness Scholarship, given annually to an outstanding college jazz student in Oregon. Just prior to his third and final year, Chance was chosen as one of the first of two recipients of the Brad Mersereau Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship made it possible for Chance to complete his Bachelor’s of Music Performance in Jazz, graduating in 2008 with the distinction of youngest to do so.
Chance continues to labor tirelessly shaping and polishing his craft and experimenting at the boundaries of both the acoustic and electric guitar. Committed to developing an individual voice, he's willing to take risks to develop as a musician and act as a leader despite being younger than most of his colleagues. While leading an array of groups from small combos to a nine-piece electric salute to Miles Davis to Troubled Boots, his Vintage Americana project, Chance also performs avidly as a sideman to artists such as Shelly Rudolph, Tom Grant, Darrell Grant, Devin Phillips and the Oregon Jazz Orchestra.
"As an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at Portland State University, and also as a jazz player who came up in New York amongst the talented young lions of the 1980s and 90s, I believe that Chance Hayden is an unusual talent with a great deal of potential. Although young, he plays with a maturity, assurance and taste that belie his youth.
I first met Chance when he enrolled in PSUs music program at age 18, having already completed a two-year Associates Degree at Clark College while he got his high school diploma. This precociousness is indicative of the kind of student that Chance is, as well as of the dedication he exhibits as an aspiring musician.
In his three years of study at PSU he added to his already high level of musical skills. In addition to being a strong improviser, he sight-reads well, learns music quickly, and handles himself on the bandstand with professionalism and aplomb.
One of my traditions at PSU is to hire two or three of my advanced students each year to form a working group that performs with me at clubs, festivals and other venues. In ten years of teaching Chance is the youngest student that I have engaged in this group. On his own, he has also taken the initiative as a young artist in gaining exposure in the community, booking himself and other young players into local venues, and collaborating with more experienced musicians to create performance opportunities.
It is my feeling that Chance has the intelligence, musicianship and leadership skills to develop into a jazz musician of the highest caliber, along with the attitude necessary to thrive in the music world."
